Impressive upgrade works on the Orte-Falconara line

Interruption of the railway service between Terni and Foligno for modernization

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), part of the Infrastructure Hub of the FS Italiane Group, has announced a series of significant infrastructure upgrades on the Orte-Falconara line, specifically in the section between Terni and Foligno. These works will take place from 3 May to 8 June 2024 and will involve an investment of 20 million euros.

The operations involve the construction of an artificial rockfall tunnel approximately 40 meters long, intended to protect the railway site from hydrogeological instability phenomena, in particular in response to a landslide that occurred in January 2021. Furthermore, 360 meters of rock walls will be consolidated along the path. Another important intervention is the implementation of the Slab Track technique inside the Balduini Tunnel, on the Baiano-Giuncano section, which extends for approximately 1700 metres. This construction method involves a reinforced concrete structure that replaces the traditional bed of crushed stone and sleepers, thus reducing the need for maintenance and increasing the reliability of the service.

In Spoleto, the works will include the installation of a new Central Computerized Equipment (ACC), an advanced system that optimizes rail traffic management by increasing efficiency and safety. Furthermore, preparatory works will be carried out for the doubling of the Spoleto-Campello section and for the implementation of the ERTMS (European Rail Transport Management System) between Foligno, Terni and Orte, one of the most advanced train movement control systems in the world. .

To facilitate these modernizations, the suspension of railway traffic between Terni and Foligno will be necessary, which will take effect from 11.40pm on 3 May until 5.00am on 8 June. During this period, approximately 120 technicians and workers from RFI and contracting companies will be engaged in various activities, ranging from armament and electric traction to safety and signaling systems.

These interventions will not only increase the safety and efficiency of the railway line in question but also significantly improve the travel experience for commuters and other users of the railway service, guaranteeing cutting-edge infrastructure and a more reliable service.
