Salerno, they try to steal a boat from Masuccio Salernitano: caught by municipal agents

Two Tunisians, in their early twenties, one already known to the police and the other with no criminal record, were arrested on Sunday night at the Masuccio Salernitano pier by officers of the Salerno Municipal Police. The two were caught in the act of committing a crime while trying to steal a small boat, moored right at the Salerno tourist port.

The episode occurred around 10.45pm, when a municipal patrol passing in front of the entrance to the Port was stopped by one of the workers guarding the moored boats. The man who had already alerted the Port Authority then asked the two agents to intervene, having noticed that the two criminals had already loosened their moorings and were ready to move away into the sea. The two officers from the municipality of Salerno therefore headed towards the dock where the boat was moored and in the meantime had asked for support from the other patrols in the area. Within a few minutes, two more patrols arrived on site. The municipal officials approached the dock and began to order the two, who were moving away by maneuvering the boat with the oars, since they had not managed to start the engine, to go back. At the same time, some ropes were thrown towards the boat, more or less 5 meters long, to try to hook it. After a series of attempts and intimidations, the two boys gave up their intent to steal and went back. Once the boat was docked again, the municipal officials handcuffed the two and loaded them into the Subaru, the new car supplied to the Municipality, specifically for the transport of prisoners, to take them to the headquarters. Once here, after having ascertained that the two were not in possession of any type of identification document, they took them to the police station for mug shots and here they discovered that one of the two, who arrived in Italy about a year ago, had already known to the police for crimes committed between Turin and Rome, while the other, without a criminal record, had landed in Lampedusa about twenty days ago. Both were accompanied around 4.30 in the morning to the Fuorni prison, to then be processed directly on Monday morning in the presence of an interpreter. The prosecutor had asked for the two to be detained in prison, but the judge there sentenced them to one year and 4 months, a suspended sentence. At this point the municipal officials present in the courtroom requested authorization for the immediate expulsion of the two which was granted by the judge. Then the two were taken back to the Fuorni Prison and then on Monday afternoon they were accompanied to the Salerno Police Headquarters for expulsion.
