From the new report by the Antigone Association, which deals with prison conditions in Italy, it can be seen that prison attendance is growing, suicides are growing and many of the chronic problems of our penitentiary system are worsening. Like every year, Antigone makes the outcome of her work available, trying to shed some light on an often invisible world. “In terms of suicides, Sicily is the fourth region in Italy immediately after Lombardy, Veneto and Campania. New hires are still needed in the Penitentiary Police Force with an improvement in the working conditions of the staff and a careful preventive control of the living conditions of the Italian prisons, in particular for the city of Palermo where the shortage of personnel is now chronic, the imminent appointments of JuneJuly 2024 of new resources could partly provide relief to the penitentiary staff, we trust that the Department of Penitentiary Administration will take care of the enormous inconveniences of the Penitentiary Police operators at Ucciardone and Pagliarelli”. This was declared by Claudio Marchesini, Territorial Secretary of the UGL of Palermo.
