BRINDISI – As part of the program that sees Azione Cattolica support Legambiente’s activities throughout Italy in 2024, the initiative “The Park: your home!” in the Antonio Di Giulio Park, this initiative aims to draw attention to the degradation that affects the Park, to the acts of vandalism that occur even to the detriment of the nursery school present in the same Park and to the need for citizens and, first and foremost, the inhabitants of the Commenda neighborhood feel this environmental asset and meeting place for families and nature lovers.

The presence of volunteers and especially young people will allow us to monitor the many critical issues present and propose the most suitable solutions to the municipal administration. Apparently the acts of vandalism are carried out by young people also gathered in groups that intimidate the increasingly scarce visitors to the Park. It is certainly necessary to resort to systems of constant surveillance and repression of acts of vandalism and consequent crimes, but at the same time active citizenship is necessary in protecting and experiencing the Park.

Legambiente, already in 2016, also presented through a conference the proposal for the establishment of a Brindisi Natura park body for the management of all urban parks and all protected areas present in the municipal territory of Brindisi, the proposal articulated on the basis of experience built by the Roma Natura park authority and its then president Maurizio Gubbiotti was made official again on 4 October 2018, in a meeting with the Mayor in the presence of the national president of Federparchi and guaranteed his support in the event of the establishment of the park authority. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of organic and efficient organization of the planning of the management of city parks with the effect of dispersing funding through extemporaneous interventions: the case of the Villanova farm intended to be the visitor center of the park, still on paper and not, is typical. protected, of the Punta della Contessa salt pans which, after spending hundreds of thousands of euros (it seems like a million), were once again devastated by vandals in the absence of planning and management of the protection and valorisation activities of the park.

Legambiente and Azione Cattolico of the Diocese of Brindisi have already obtained support for the realization of the initiative and invite associations, social and institutional representatives and ordinary citizens to participate on Saturday 4 May from 4pm, in a Park which for the City is even more for the Brindisi Legambiente club registered in the name of Doctor Di Giulio, has an intrinsic value and one linked to the personality to whom it is registered, as the then Mayor Mimmo Mennitti underlined at the time of the inauguration.
