Maxi-ZTL, 78 km of cycle paths, one-way streets and Mobility hub: here is the PUMS rejected in Busto

BUSTO ARSIZIO – After the resounding rejection by the majority it has been talked about for days, but only the centre-right city councilors have been able to see it in full: it is the PUMS, the Urban Sustainable Mobility Plan proposed by the mobility councilor Salvatore Loschiavo. A draft that will probably never arrive among the official documents of the civic assembly: already this evening, April 30, it is scheduled the first meeting of the working group called to review the Plan after the majority stopped it.

Pedestrianizations

The first key point is the extension of the ZTL, the limited traffic area of the historic center. With the discussed ones pedestrianization of Piazza Garibaldi and Piazza Trento e Triestebut also the novelty of the special pedestrian priority area regime which would also include via Montebello, via Matteotti and Corso Europa. Towards the east, the PUMS plans to close to cars piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, via Carducci, via Don Minzoni (between via Rosmini and Via Carducci), via GB Bossi (between via Rosmini and via Carducci), via Rosmini, piazza Garibaldi (ad exclusion of the stretch that allows the turn from via Galilei to via Fratelli d’Italia), corso XX Settembre (between piazza Garibaldi and viale Cadorna), via Cattaneo, via San Giusto, via Daniele Crespi, piazza Trento e Trieste and via Mazzini (between piazza Trento e Trieste and via Foscolo). Towards the west, however, in addition to the already planned extension of the ZTL in via Cavallotti and via Bramante, it is hypothesized to establish a special regime of area with pedestrian priority without limitation of vehicular flowsbut through the implementation of traffic calming measures. A sort of “ZTL light” in via MontebelloRe Magi alley, Level alley, Rovello alley, Custodi alley, Clerici alley, Albrisi alley, San Carlo Borromeo alley, via Matteotti, via 22 Marzo, Provasoli alley, Corso Europa (between via Massari and via 22 Marzo), via Crespi Castoldi , via Porta, via Bambaia and via Roma (between via Bambaia and via Bramante).

The Biciplan

Another burning chapter that causes discussion is that ofextension of the cycle path network in the city. The PUMS has the ambitious objective of increasing the kilometers of routes dedicated to bicycles by up to 150%. Passing from 31 km in the current state to over 78 km: an overall figure that would also include the interventions already planned and approved with the PUT (Urban Traffic Plan) and with the Gipadüa project launched by councilor Loschiavo. In parallel, the Plan also provides ad hoc signage for cycle routes and the creation of new ones racks for parking bicyclesbut also the installation around the city of columns for bicycle maintenanceequipped with a pump for inflation and small tools such as screwdrivers and wrenches.

The one-way streets

The chapter dedicated to new one-way streets, including that of via Silvio Pellico (heading west, to create an anti-clockwise ring with via Venegoni and Espinasse). Other areas affected by the change in traffic directions are that of Court (confirm via Beccaria and Machiavelli heading west, Piave heading east), i Holy Apostlesbetween the station and the Sempione (via Zara in the north direction, via Fiume in the east direction, via Gorizia in the west direction, via Redipuglia in the east direction, via Boezio in the north direction, via Seneca in the south direction, via Montepulciano in the north direction and via Siena southbound)And Borsano (via Cavalcanti in a west-east direction and via Cardinal Simone in an east-west direction).

The 30 zones

Among the other innovations foreseen by the PUMS, the establishment of new school zones, or in any case traffic calming interventions, in front of most schools. But also a series of new ones zones 30 in via Palestro, via Settembrini, via Acerbi, via Lodi, via Sanzio, via Samarate (in front of the Pascoli school), via Caprera/Ferrari, via Bevilacqua, via Caduti, via Montello, via Genova, the whole ring of the center (already provided for by the Urban Traffic Plan), via Mazzini/piazza Trento Trieste/via Lissoni, via Zappellini/Volta/Manzoni, via Galvani, via Marco Polo/Deledda (to reduce noise), via Sicilia, via Canton Santo, via Gozzano, via Rossini, via Dante, via Carducci, via Monfalcone, via Cassano/Arnate and via Tagliamento. It’s still, new urban public transport linesalready planned for a future terminus at the single hospital of Beata Giuliana.

The Mobility Hubs

And then there is the chapter of the transformation of a series of car parks located in strategic points of the city into the so-called Mobility Hubi.e. rest areas for private vehicles where additional services are offered such as charging points for electric vehicles, sharing mobility services (cars, bicycles, scooters, etc.) and logistics services, such as locker for parcel collection or even (in the so-called “Mobility Hub Plus”) actual spaces for the temporary storage of goods intended to be transported with lighter vehicles to the shops. A response to the topic oflast mile of logistics directed to the LTZ businesseswhich was much discussed in the public meetings preparatory to the PUMS.
