Bergamo Airport: the expansion project

SACBO, the company that manages Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport, has invested 41 million euros of its own financial resources for this construction site. The project includes, on the ground floor of the eastern section of the airport, a renovated and expanded check-in room of 3720 square meters compared to the current one. The area will be equipped with 22 more desks for check-in operations and latest generation x-ray machines (BHS) for checking hold baggage.

Equipment will also be upgraded security checks. These will be able to benefit from 7400 square meters of dedicated surface area, located on the first floor of the terminal. They will be installed here 14 C3 type stations for the analysis of the contents of hand luggage. These devices will save the traveler from having to remove laptops, electronic devices and liquids from their baggage during checks.

Enlargement also in sight for the spaces intended for departures of non-Schengen flights, thanks to the creation of two new boarding gates. Finally, the area duty free it will almost triple, going from today’s 600 square meters to 1600.

A bigger terminal and soon also the train

The Bergamo Airport expansion project also has a slogan: “More spaces, more comfort, faster, further“.

Second Giovanni Sangapresident of SACBO, this sentence aims to express and summarize «the objective of the interventions to adapt airport spaces. An important investment that allows us to always look to the future from the perspective of sustainability, taking into account that the end of the expansion works of the passenger terminal will precede the opening of the direct rail connection with the airport».

The latter is a particularly awaited intervention. In fact, it will allow you to connect the Bergamo airport to the national railway network, through a double track over 5 km long and a station directly serving the airport. When fully operational, a train to the airport is expected every 10 minutes. Travel times will drop to 10 minutes for Bergamo city and 60 for Milan. A valid alternative, therefore, to going to catch the plane in a sustainable waysaving fuel costs and parking.

«As well as facilitating accessibility from a multimodality perspective – adds Sanga – our goal is to make the passenger terminal increasingly welcoming, functional and pleasant, facilitating check-in operations and security checks and allowing all the services to be enjoyed during the time passengers stay at the airport».
