Castellammare di Stabia / Sorrento Peninsula, the Port Authority seizes 2.5 tons of “lupine” clams. During the night just passed, the military personnel of the Judicial Police unit of the Port Authority of Castellammare di Stabia, under the coordination of the Maritime Directorate of Naples , has set up a real task force in order to combat illegal fishing and the illegal trade of fish products. The operation, which began late yesterday evening, involved around ten soldiers who carried out checks in the area of Castellammare di Stabia and the surrounding municipalities, finding the presence of approximately 2.5 tonnes of clams of the type inside a vehicle. “lupino” (from the scientific name “chamelea gallina”), without any document certifying its origin, the fishing area, the gear used or the fishing vessel that carried out the fishing.
In order to evade potential controls, the bivalve molluscs had been hidden inside polystyrene containers bearing the words blue crab. For this reason, the driver of the vehicle was sanctioned for the possession of untraceable fish products and with an administrative fine of 1,500 euros, while the fish product found was subjected to seizure as an additional sanction.
Control over the fish supply chain represents one of the main tasks of the Port Authority Corps, to verify compliance, both at sea and on land, with national and community provisions on fishing, with the aim of protecting the fish resource, but also the final consumer, guaranteeing the placing on the market of products whose origin is clear, also to protect authorized operators. Precisely for this reason, the control activity of the territory, of the storage and marketing centers of fish products and of the entire coast of competence will continue without stopping by the soldiers of the Stabia Coast Guard of Commander Rosamarina Sardella also in the next few days, at in order to prosecute those who, unscrupulously and for the sole purpose of profit, endanger public health.
