The Municipality of Messina and AMAM SpA held a press conference today, Tuesday 30 April, to present the fifth step of the operations aimed at mitigating the vulnerabilities of the Fiumefreddo Aqueduct. The interventions will start at 7 am on Friday 3 May and will last 24 hours, causing an interruption in the supply of water in the city until full resumption on Sunday 5 May. The mayor Federico Basile, the president of AMAM Loredana Bonasera, the councilor Massimiliano Minutoli, the members of the Board of Directors Alessandra Franza and Adriano Grassi, together with the general director of the SpA Pierfrancesco Donato, illustrated the technical details and the operational plan.
Mayor Basile underlined the importance of providing timely information to citizens regarding this planned interruption, in accordance with the timetable established since last October. The interventions will mainly concern the replacement of the joints from Letojanni to Itala, together with other crucial activities for the project to mitigate the vulnerabilities of Fiumefreddo.
As regards the technical aspects, President Bonasera specified that the minor works will be concentrated in the municipalities of Alí Terme and Itala. Constant control and monitoring will be guaranteed, with the support of the municipal COC, as already happened for previous water suspensions.
Councilor Minutoli illustrated the operating methods of the COC, active from 8 am on Friday 3 May until midnight, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May from 7.30 am to midnight. Citizens will be able to report any critical issues to the telephone number 090-22866, with the invitation to limit calls, especially those regarding supply, if you still have water reserves in the tanks, in order to facilitate the most urgent interventions.
Drinking water distribution points will also be set up in various parts of the city:
- Tanker near Viale Annunziata
- Fixed water supply stations from wells:
- Via Girolamo Savonarola, intersection with Via Onofrio Gabriele, near Piazza Castronovo
- AMAM headquarters in Viale Giostra – Pick up
- Viale Europa at the Piedmont Hospital
- Via Principe Umberto near the Reservoir – Torre Vittoria
