In the end it went well, but it could have been much worse. And that doesn’t mean it ends here, because the Taranto you can always turn to the TAR if you lose before the body of last resort. The Ionian club’s appeal to the Coni Guarantee Board will be discussed on Friday 3 May (and not Saturday 4, as initially thought) and the sentence, with related reasons, published by Monday 6 and issued on the same day. This is why the Lega Pro postponed the playoffs by just 3 days. So we start on Tuesday 7 May with the single match matches of the first round of the group stage.
The Benevento, however, after having complicated his life by also losing in Catania, he must wait for the verdict to find out when he will be able to play in the post-season. If the arguments of the lawyer Chiacchio, who defends the Apulian club, were to be accepted, and 2 of the 4 points were returned to the rossoblù, the giallorossi would slip to fourth place and play the second round of the group stage, in a single match, on Saturday 11th May, at home against the worst qualified among Latina, Picerno, Crotone, Cerignola and Giugliano (i.e. the one that will have scored the fewest points in the regular season). In this case the Giallorossi would still be the best fourth having scored more points (66) than Triestina (group A, 64) and Perugia (group B, 63) and if they were to pass the round, in the national phase (round of 16), they would become seeded, acquiring the right to play the return match at home (on the 18th, while the first leg is played away on the 14th) and, consequently, to count on two results at the end of the 180′ (there are no overtimes and penalties until the final four).
Otherwise, if the appeal were not accepted and things remained as they are now, Benevento would start from the first round of the national phase, playing the first match away on Tuesday 14 May and the return match at home on Saturday 18 May. Therefore the Giallorossi club will remain on the sidelines waiting to know their ranking position, while they could have been decidedly calmer if they had achieved at least one equal to the «Massimino»: the Taranto in fact, it aims to return 2 points at most and with Benevento ahead in the direct clash, even if the tie materialized, third place would have remained a chimera for the team Capuano. And instead the men of Auteridisplaying one of the worst performances of the season (certainly the worst ever away) have chosen to suffer until next May 3rd, remaining in a real limbo. The play-offs will end on Sunday 9 June with the second leg final. Taranto’s appeal, as will be remembered, was filed last April 24th, at the CONI Board of Guarantee: once the reasons that led the FIGC Federal Court of Appeal to confirm the 4-point penalty were known, the lawyer of the Ionian club challenged the provision asking to ascertain the legitimacy of the sanction inflicted and therefore requesting the total cancellation of the penalty.
In the meantime for the Benevento it rains on the wet. After the forgettable regular season finale, the medical response on the condition of his knee arrived yesterday Pastina: as feared, the defender has damaged his external meniscus and will have to be operated on (arthroscopy): the operation has already been scheduled for today in Battipaglia (Pastina’s hometown), at the «Salus» clinic and will be carried out by Professor Donato Notarfrancesco, head of the Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Knee Surgery department. A month’s break is looming for him.
He will not be available for the first part of the playoffs, he could possibly recover, if Benevento continues on their path, for the semi-finals. Today the Roman retreat begins (which will last just 5 days), with Ciciretti And Improta who will join the team and will probably also return to the group after having resolved their respective physical problems.
