Lugo (RA), 12 May – 23 June 2024 | inauguration: 11 May

What is a trip?

There are many definitions, but in the exhibition “Journey to Italy. Itineraries of contemporary architecture”is understood as a dimension of doing and experiencing architecture.

Promoted by ProViaggiArchitettura and curated by Roberto Bosi And Mattia Pavarottithe exhibition – which can be visited from 12 May to 23 June in the courtyard of the Rocca Estense in Lugo – tells 19 places scattered from north to south of Italy through the architecture of as many young Italian studios.

We will find places of art, libraries, residences, offices, hospitality spaces but also an agricultural pavilion, a liturgical hall, a funeral home and a pavilion dedicated to temporary exhibitions and conferences on the theme of the memory of the mining landscape.

They are all places closely linked to the territory in which they ariseselected on the basis of research into the link between public and private space, external and internal, which builds a relational process for sharing spaces, which have now become part of the cultural and natural heritage of our country.

Born as an extension of the volume of the same name published by LetteraVentidue Edizioni in 2024, the exhibition will be accompanied by the architectural and emotional map “places of affection” of each of the designers involved, who will talk about themselves during the inaugural conference ‘The journey continues’scheduled in Lugo on May 11, 2024, in conjunction with Romagna in Blooma solidarity initiative by Ravenna Festival for and in places affected by the 2023 flood.

Not an exhaustive overview but what «it represents a significant cross-section of the work of a new generation of architects: professionals who conduct their research through the academy and the construction site, passing through architectural competitions as the preferential path towards the quality of the project» – explain the curators

He adds Marcello Bacchinidirector of ProViaggiArchitettura: «The exhibition presents itself as an urban intervention, as ephemeral architecture that becomes an element of aggregation, making the public space transformable and permeable. The project aims to promote the relationships that are generated between citizens and the city, as well as the synergies that have been created between the partners who have actively joined the initiative by supporting its implementation. An example of how to network by bringing added value to the community.”

The installation by horizontal

The itinerary among the 19 places scattered across Italy is traced by the installation of the horizontal collective, created for the Piazze exhibition. Phenomenologies of the unexpected and adapted to be welcomed into the Rocca Estense in Lugo.

By entering into connection with the historic building, it reconfigures its spaces and relationships: as in a photograph album, the panels create a story in stages, while the base of the exhibition wall widens, designing a seat for passers-by and visitors to rest, in an explicit invitation aimed at welcoming them into the space, becoming part of the exhibition themselves and creating opportunities for relationships and dialogue.
