Manduria: The kids in Taranto for the global strike for climate and peace

Yesterday, around a hundred Mandurian students joined forces with their peers from high schools in neighboring towns to demonstrate in the streets of the center of Taranto, on the occasion of the “Global Strike for Climate and Peace” called by the Fridays For Future movement Taranto. The climate crisis was at the center of the message that young people wanted to take to the streets.

The young people of the Taranto movement forcefully expressed their request: «We want to reiterate that the right transition comes from the closure of all those polluting sources such as Ilva, Eni, landfills etc. They cannot continue – the boys declare – to attack an already tormented territory with other large impacting works such as the largest watermaker in Italy on the Tara River or the floating photovoltaic park in Mar Piccolo. We desire – they conclude – a different future for this city based on its true potential and natural resources”.

The day began with a procession that wound along Via di Palma in Taranto until reaching Piazza della Vittoria. Here a stage was set up with an adjoining service, where various school bands had the opportunity to express their talent through musical performances.

In addition to the climate crisis, the boys also wanted to raise the Israeli-Palestinian issue, reiterating their desire for peace.
