BORRELLO. Six environmental associations raise the cry of alarm: “What if the Verde waterfalls are no longer there tomorrow?”. Rewilding Apennines Ets, Let’s Save the Bear, Lipu Abruzzo, Altura, the Abruzzo Ornithological Station and the Abruzzo Forum of Water Movements, with an open letter, address the European Union, the Ministry of the Environment, the Region and the Municipalities of Rosello and Borrello . The associations express surprise and disappointment in learning of the project to increase the collection of water from the Surienze spring, in the Rosello area but closely connected to the Rio Verde stream, in Borrello. «Project idea», they say, «of an old concept, already rejected at the first presentation at the beginning of the 90s. Capturing more water means taking it away from the river and the environment, threatening the biological cycles connected to the waterways.” It must also be said that the European Union has spent considerable capital within the Life program for the conservation and protection of crayfish, included in the Habitats Directive among the animal species requiring rigorous protection. The most important reproduction center of the species in Abruzzo and Molise is that of Borrello. «The activities carried out in this centre, which brought the name of Borrello and Abruzzo to Europe, are strongly threatened by the possible water reduction caused by the Surienze project. Already heavily threatened by global warming, the karst nature of the Rio Verde basin and the reduction in rainfall, will the Verde waterfalls”, conclude the associations, “remain as we see them today? Or maybe we will be forced to change the name of the regional reserve because the waterfalls will no longer be there?”.
