Trieste Trasporti, news for lines 64, 51 and 36 and the Trieste-Sistiana maritime service in May
Descriptive text here

In May there are several new features and changes arriving which concern line 64 between Piazza Tommaseo and Opicina, line 51 direct to the eastern plateau, line 36 to Miramare and the Trieste-Sistiana maritime service. Let’s see them one by one.

LINE 64 (PIAZZA TOMMASEO-OPICINA)

From next May 2nd the usual timetables of line 64 between Piazza Tommaseo and Opicina will be restored. This resolves one of the issues that had been ongoing in the city for over two months. In fact, since March 1st, a change to the timetable had to be introduced to prevent buses from having to stop at the Opicina terminus, which is almost constantly occupied by illegally parked cars. Every attempt by the local police to free the terminus had been unsuccessful and this prevented the buses from stopping and caused traffic disruption. Today, finally, the solution: from Thursday, the route of the 64 will be extended to the Fernetti retirement home, in front of which a new stop will be established. This will allow, on the one hand, to restore the previous frequency of the connection (preventing lines 2/ and 64 from traveling together via Commerciale) and, on the other, to serve those who work or visit the Fernetti retirement home.

The new timetables include departures every 20 minutes from Piazza Tommaseo from 6.20am to 8.00pm and transits every 20 minutes to Opicina from 6.48am to 8.28pm. All trips departing from Piazza Tommaseo will be extended to Fernetti, where they will reverse course and then return to Opicina and head towards the city: in fact, between Opicina and Fernetti, there will not be a real terminus but only stops on request.

This is a story that suggests two lessons: first of all, that transport is a complex system that we all must take care of and, as happens with complex systems, small disturbances – due in this case to the indiscipline of a few – can generate discontent and inconveniences that affect hundreds or thousands of people. The second lesson concerns the company’s ability, together with the Region, the Municipalities of Trieste and Monrupino and the district, to dialogue and create a solution in a few weeks, without taking backward steps but, rather, extending the service to an area who had been asking us for a long time.

LINE 51 (LIBERTY SQUARE-EAST PLATEAU)

Changes are also coming to line 51 which connects Piazza della Libertà with the eastern plateau and the Basovizza and Padriciano campuses of Area Science Park. The line is one of the most complex connections on the network, having to satisfy very different requests and stresses in an area where thousands of people live and work. From Thursday 2 May we introduced a series of changes which respond on the one hand to some of the needs expressed by the area and, on the other, offer a direct connection in the morning to those who work on the Area Science Park campuses. An innovative and important intervention, the latter, which should lighten the flows on morning trips from Largo City of Santos.

Thus, from 2 May two new express routes will be established, departing from Piazza della Libertà at 8.23am and 8.37am, directed to the Basovizza and Padriciano areas. The two routes will omit some stops along the route to prevent the buses from being used by university students heading to Piazzale Europa. The stops that will be omitted are the following:

via del Coroneo (Palazzo della Regione);
via Fabio Severo 143 (Masè curve);
via Valerio 2 and via Valerio 20 (University, piazzale Europa).
One of the problems of line 51, in fact, is that in the morning the connection is used by many students heading to Piazzale Europa, and this prevents it from being used by those who instead have to go to Basovizza or Padriciano. The two express trips will thus be reserved for Area users, while university students will be able to go to the university with lines 17 and 17/ (whose frequency is very high). In the first days of operation, Trieste Trasporti staff will provide assistance to people (at stops and on board buses) to avoid misunderstandings.

Other changes to the timetables of line 51 are indicated below:

the 2.45pm ride departing from Piazza della Libertà will no longer pass through Area Science Park, while the 3.15pm ride from Largo Città di Santos will be directed to the Padriciano and Basovizza campuses;
the 3.55pm journey departing from Villa Carsia is postponed to 4.00pm, while the 4.50pm journey leaves via Banne;
the race departing at 4.45pm from Piazza della Libertà was also postponed by five minutes, while the 5.15pm race was diverted to Banne.

LINE 36 (MIRAMARE-LARGO TOMIZZA CROSSROADS)

Line 36 between the Miramare crossroads and Via Giulia (Largo Tomizza) resumes on May 1st. Until the summer timetable comes into force, the connection will only operate on Saturdays and Sundays; then, from June 10th, the line will be daily. The connection will be carried out with 18-metre articulated buses, which can contain up to 150 people. To allow the connection to function regularly, without slowing down vehicular flows, it is important that the bus stops along Viale Miramare are left free and that parking in the second row and above all parking near the crossroads (where the buses turn around) are avoided. the march).

TRIESTE-SISTIANA MARITIME SERVICE

The Trieste-Sistiana maritime connection also returns from Wednesday 1 May. With almost 70 thousand passengers on board in 2023, the line not only brings forward the departure date by a month (usually set at 1 June) but extends the season until Saturday 12 October, the day before the Barcolana regatta. The Tpl Fvg maritime connection, operated by Trieste Trasporti together with Delfino Verde Navigazione, will cover a total of 16,900 miles in the over five months of operation, more or less six times the distance that separates, as the crow flies, Portugal from New England.

The new connection, from May 1st, will make four departures a day from Trieste and the same number from Sistiana, with intermediate stops in Barcola (on the internal side of the breakwater) and Grignano. Departures from Trieste at 8:00, 11:00, 14:30 and 17:30 (boarding is on the Bersaglieri pier); from Sistiana we start again at 9.25am, 12.25pm, 3.55pm and 6.55pm. The service is active seven days a week.

The cost of single-journey tickets ranges from 3.10 euros for the Trieste-Barcola route to 7.10 euros for the complete route up to Sistiana. But for residents or enthusiasts there are also season tickets for ten or fifty journeys: the season ticket for fifty journeys up to Barcola costs 24.80 euros, or less than 50 cents per journey (less than half of an hourly ticket for the ‘bus). A very valid alternative, therefore, to lighten the flows (very intense during the summer season) along viale Miramare.
