Gangmastering in agriculture, 10 arrests in Tuscany

Pays up to 0.97 euros per hour to work in the Tuscan countryside, in a system of exploitation discovered by the Carabinieri of the provincial command of Livorno against non-EU citizens hosted in an extraordinary reception center (Cas) typical of Livorno. And so this morning at dawn the anti-corporate operation began with 10 arrests against persons of Pakistani nationality suspected in various capacities and in collaboration with each other illicit intermediation and exploitation of labour.

The investigation was conducted – under the direction of the Livorno prosecutor’s office – by the operational and mobile unit of the Carabinieri of the Piombino company with the support of the labor inspectorate unit of the Force, managing to reconstruct the illicit use of manpower carried out by 6 owners of individual businesses operating in the agricultural sector.

Also making use of other subjects for recruitmentthe daily transport and control of the workers, taking advantage of their state of need, employed 67 citizens of Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationality hosted at the CAS, using them for the harvesting vegetables and olivesas well as for the cleaning of vineyards on land in the provinces of Livorno And Grosseto.

No employment contract and working hours up to 10 hours a day without breaks, salary far from the 10.56 euros per hour envisaged by the contract. In one case the pay was even 0.97 euros per hour), moreover with systematic violation of safety and hygiene regulations.

In addition to the 10 arrests, a decree of preventive seizure of 45 thousand EUR as profit ascertained by INPS following the failure to pay social security and insurance contributions for illegally employed workers.
