Wash your hands correctly, the main vehicle for transmitting infections. A rule that applies more if you are in a hospital environment. Thus was born the pilot project that the Aou of Sassari started last January and which will end, in its first phase, on Monday 6 May, on the occasion of World Hand Hygiene Day which will be celebrated by the WHO on Sunday 5 May.
In Sassari from 9am to 1pm, in the meeting room on the seventh floor of the Santissima Annunziata, the results achieved in these months of activity will be presented. The project, divided into two different actions – for operators and patients – was carried out in four departments: Hematology, Traumatology and Orthopedics of the Santissima Annunziata, Neonatal Intensive Care and then Paediatrics, and implemented by the medical management, hygiene and infections hospitals in close collaboration with the CICA “Hand Hygiene” working group, the Care-Related Infections Committee which made this possible within the departments.
Doctors in training from the UNISS specialization school in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine also participated in the initiative. «This is a very important process – explains Professor Paolo Castiglia, director of the Medical Directorate and president of CICA – because the practice of hand hygiene is an indispensable life-saving weapon: on the one hand it allows the patient to be kept in good state of health, on the other hand it guarantees safety in the face of the possible onset of infections during the patient’s stay in hospital”. «If 5 moments of hand hygiene have been identified for healthcare workers, for patients there is no univocal indication in the literature – adds Dr. Grazia Maria Deriu, coordinator of the Hand Hygiene Working Group – but only some proposals. We have made our own those relating to the moments: before and after touching the mouth, nose, wounds and medical devices; after using the bathroom; after touching handles and handrails; before eating and before taking medicine.”
