May 1st in Florence: national demonstration to say enough to murders at work
Descriptive text here

On Wednesday 1st May in Florence there will be a national demonstration to say enough to murders at work. The Unione Sindacale di Base is participating, together with many other political and social forces, in the demonstration on May 1st in Florence, scheduled for 10:00 am from via Mariti.

The procession will take place near the Esselunga construction site where five workers were killed in the terrible collapse on February 16th. On the occasion of that internship we witnessed the usual series of political declarations affirming the well-worn slogan: never again!

A few weeks later, near Lake Suviana, another terrible massacre cost the lives of 7 workers at the Enel power plant in Bargi, on 9 April. Workers almost all contracted out to external companies, as were the workers overwhelmed in Brandizzo on the railway line.

The massacre of workers has not stopped, far from it: last Friday a young 23-year-old worker was killed in the Milan area crushed by a waste disposal machine, while in the Siena area a 22-year-old mechanic died from a blow to the chest by an iron bar. In the last few hours, at least another 39-year-old worker was added, crushed when a vehicle overturned on Lake Como, and an 118 operator in Rome, suffering a heart attack.

In our country there is a widespread employer culture that sees health and safety as a cost, to be reduced to the bare minimum in order to maximize profits. USB has been carrying out a campaign for some time to introduce the crime of murder and serious injury at work into the penal code, as a form of deterrence against those who cut back on health and safety at work and to say enough with the procurement system. Our proposal also includes measures to strengthen the control system: immediate hiring of new inspectors and more power for the Workers’ Safety Representatives (RLS).

For these reasons we will be in Florence for a major demonstration, together with many other political and social forces, which puts the issue of safety at work back at the centre: enough with the murders at work, let’s stop the massacre.
