The three teams with 31 points in the standings (Verona, Empoli and Frosinone) are the crux of the question regarding the mathematical salvation that Genoa has already achieved, with five rounds to spare, without having yet played the match against Cagliari. Today’s results, in fact, give us a Genoa that is already mathematically safe with an advance that has been missing for practically ten years.

Why? Because by virtue of the upcoming direct clashes some options have become impossible, primarily that from now until the end all four win, as many as six of the seven teams still in the running for salvation behind Genoa, namely: Cagliari, Lecce, Empoli, Frosinone, Udinese and Sassuolo (not counting Salernitana, already arithmetically relegated, ed).

These will be the direct clashes in the last four days (only Hellas Verona will not play any):

  • Cagliari-Lecce
  • Empoli-Frosinone
  • Lecce-Udinese
  • Sassuolo-Cagliari
  • Udinese-Empoli
  • Frosinone-Udinese

The only possible match is for Udinese and Cagliari to win them all, very trivially because these are the only two teams that will not cross paths with each other, other than Hellas Verona. If this happened, however, it would mean that theEmpoli (who will challenge Udinese on the penultimate matchday) would score nine points out of twelve, also taking three from the Frosinonewho at this point, virtually deprived of another three points in the direct clash of the last round with Udinese, could not score more than six, reaching 37.

Even if it were Frosinone who condemned Empoli to six points instead of nine, it wouldn’t change the picture. In that case, Empoli would remain at 37, i.e. behind Genoa by two points. All these calculations, combined with the 26 points of Sassuolo defeated in Florence, would already be enough this evening to keep three teams behind Genoa at 39 points given that the neroverdi are -13 from Griffin.

Cagliari, Dossena is also added to the list of absentees against Genoa
