Photovoltaic: Solecaldo, the new Edison plant in Sicily

As part of its renewables development strategy, which intends to reach 2 GW of installed photovoltaic capacity by 2030, Edison recently inaugurated a new 41 MW plant in Aidone, in the province of Enna, “Solecaldo”.

The characteristics of the “Solecaldo” photovoltaic system

The plant, which has already come into operation, generates 71.5 GWh of green energy per year and is able to satisfy the energy needs of over 26,000 families. Construction of the plant began in 2020 and involved the collaboration of 45 different suppliers. In December 2023, the connection to the national electricity grid was completed. To redevelop the area, Edison has arranged for the planting of more than 10,000 olive trees in 17 hectares of land.

Edison’s projects in Sicily

Sicily occupies a first-rate role for the Group in the energy transition process, since all of Edison’s main businesses are present on the island. With the “Solecaldo” plant, Edison further strengthens its presence in the region, planning to build another 300 MW from renewable sources in the next three years.

There are currently four 104 MW wind farms operating in Sicily, located in the provinces of Trapani, Enna and Messina, and two photovoltaic plants (the one in Aidone and the 5 MW one in Agira). Furthermore, a new construction site for a 55 MW photovoltaic plant was recently inaugurated in Tudia, near Palermo, and three other photovoltaic plants have already received the necessary authorizations.

Edison’s renewable energy development plan also provides for the implementation of flexibility tools, such as hydroelectric pumping, which make it possible to increase the clean energy available to the national electricity grid. The company plans to build a pumping plant with a capacity of 300 MW in Villarosa (Enna). At present, the Group has obtained a positive environmental compatibility assessment and is awaiting the conclusion of the concession process at the Sicily Region and the Single Authorization process at the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security
