V8 and 2V8 Post Wins at Lake Wheeler Invitational

The Syracuse varsity eight and second varsity eight posted victories on the final day of racing at the Lake Wheeler Invitational in Raleigh, NC on Saturday. Syracuse finished fourth in the Pocock Cup standings, scoring 65 points. Tennessee won the cup with 99 points followed by Duke (84) in second and UCF (75) in third. The LWI field included five top-20 teams and four others receiving votes. The Orange raced against #11 Penn, #16 Duke, Clemson, North Carolina and Georgetown in the final session of the regatta. The rest of the field included #5 Tennessee, #18 Washington State, along with teams receiving votes in the national poll in Central Florida, Alabama, Miami and Iowa. The remaining teams were Boston College, Boston University, Clemson, Georgetown, Kansas, Louisville, Navy, Tulsa and North Carolina.

The varsity eight jumped out to a lead and then held off Penn and Duke through the middle of the race and won by two seconds ahead of Penn and seven seconds ahead of Duke. Clemson took third followed by UNC and Georgetown. The crew included Coxswain Caileigh Grimesstroke Emmie Frederico, Ellie-Kate Hutchinson, Alena Criss, Zoe Acosta, Kamile Kralikaite, India Aikens, Aphrodite Gioulekas and bow Izabela Krakic.

The second varsity eight battled with Duke and Penn throughout the race before edging Duke and Penn for less than two seconds. The rest of the field included UNC, Clemson and Georgetown. Coxswain April Serrano guided the crew that included stroke Elizabeth Vogt, Kaitlyn Dennis, Olivia Bachert, Lena Radke, Alice McNeill, Charlotte Ebel, Grace Loveridge and bow Mae Sweeney.

The varsity four finished third behind Duke and Penn, and ahead of Clemson, UNC and Georgetown.
The boat featured coxswain Isabelle DeSantis, stroke Nora Radke, Haley Uliasz, Aicha Abdelaziz and bow Lea Dahn.

Coxswain Chloe Van de Meulebroecke guided the second varsity four featured stroke Sarah Haney, Kelsey Boswell, Minaya Bishop and bow Lauren Coop to a second-place finish behind Duke and ahead of Penn, UNC, Georgetown and Clemson.

The third varsity eight also finished second. Duke won the race and Penn, Clemson, UNC and Georgetown took third through sixth. Coxswain Dana Shearer led the boat that included stroke Annabelle McCulloch, Maddi Segarnick, Maddy Gisby, Emma Cloud, Taylor Lewandowski, Kelly Brown, Cassandra Dasco and bow Haley Minnick.

The Orange will race at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on May 17 and 18 on Lake Wheeler in Raleigh, NC.
