Portogruaroknown as “a little Venice of the hinterland“, stands out in the eastern Veneto region, along the banks of the Lemene river. This place, steeped in history and cultureoffers a unique vision of the past thanks to its canals, bridges and mills which testify to its ancient prosperity.

The history of Portogruaro: from Roman origins to growth under the Serenissima

Founded in Roman times along the Via Annia, Portogruaro assumed a leading role already in the 11th century, when an urban nucleus was built around the Lemene and Versiola rivers. Its development as a port center under the dominion of the Serenissima contributed significantly to its economic and cultural growth. The name “Portogruaro” derives from the port of the nearby town of Gruaro, underlining its historical importance as a center of exchange and commerce.

Points of historical and cultural interest in Portogruaro

Municipal building

The Municipal Palace of Portogruaro, located in the central Piazza della Repubblica, is a splendid example of Gothic architecture. Originally built in the 13th century, the building is known for its exposed brickwork and elegant Ghibelline battlements. Inside, it houses works of art by Luigi Russolo, a local artist of great importance.

Municipal Villa

Built in the sixteenth century by the architect Guglielmo Bergamasco, the Villa Comunale was originally the home of the Frattina family. Although during the twentieth century the building lost part of its original splendor, the adjacent park remains an enchanting place, home to over sixty species of plants.

Museum of the city of Portogruaro

The Portogruaro Museum is located in the historic Torre di Sant’Agnese. Through its collections of coats of arms, statues and artefacts, the museum narrates the history of the city and its territory, offering visitors a dive into the past full of details and curiosities.

Cathedral of Sant’Andrea Apostolo

The Cathedral of Portogruaro, built in neoclassical style at the end of the 18th century, is famous not only for its architecture but also for its bell tower, the third most leaning in Italy. The internal decorations, created in the twentieth century, add a further level of beauty and art to this place of worship.
