It’s a story with a happy ending Fabrizio Emiliano, 48 years old, cybersecurity worker in a telecommunications company. Emiliano, after having ruptured his cruciate ligament last January in a skiing fall, went to the Maggiore hospital in Bologna where he was operated on with an innovative orthopedic technique by the elective orthopedic surgery team and with medium-low complexity of the ‘Local Health Authority of Bologna, directed by Dr Paolo Barca. The team, as the ASL writes in a press release, has been among the Italian centers to perform this innovative orthopedic technique for a few months.

“At the beginning of January – recalls the patient – I had a bad fall on skis, while I was on holiday with my family in Trentino. Unfortunately, since the ski had not been released, I perfectly perceived the moment of the ligament rupture. After the first aid that took place on site, often coming to Bologna for work, I started looking for a center that would perform the reconstruction technique of the anterior cruciate ligament with the quadriceps tendon, taken with a minimally invasive technique, of which I had received positive opinions from friends. ”.

The advantages of the new technique used by the Major’s team are mainly three: better and timely recovery of the ligament, greater resistance and less invasiveness of the operation. “This technique replaces the more classic one of the patellar tendon or that of the semitendinosus and gracilis” explains Paolo Barca, director of the operational unit. “Quadriceps tendon grafts offer unique advantages for cruciate ligament reconstruction: the possibility of harvesting a graft with an already predefined diameter before surgery, through an incision of less than 3 cm. This technique, born in America, represents an innovation for harvesting the quadriceps tendon through a minimally invasive procedure. The elasticity characteristics of the quadriceps tendon are those that come closest to those of the anterior cruciate ligament”.

Fabrizio Emiliano, after having been operated on last Friday morning, took the train back to Rome independently on Saturday after lunch, ready to start rehabilitation. The operation, which was successful, lasted about an hour.
