expropriations will begin at the end of May

TARANTO – Elimination of hydrogeological instability in the Salinella district, procedures begin for the expropriation of the land affected by the interventions. From what appears to the «Gazzetta», from 30 May to 3 June the owners of the 45 properties that fall within the area will have to sign the reports prepared by the officials of the Asset agency which, on the basis of an agreement with the Municipality of Taranto, is taking care of these operations. It covers over 4 thousand square meters in the area to which, for example, the «Iacovone» belongs. The execution of what in jargon are called works to mitigate the risk of hydrogeological instability are also very important for the future renovation of the stadium planned for the 2026 Games. In reality, in addition to the 4 thousand square meters to be expropriated, there is a another part which will only be used temporarily to carry out anti-flooding interventions and then returned to the legitimate owners. However, for the areas that will be definitively removed, as required by law, an indemnity will be recognized. Which, scrolling through the list of beneficiaries (private individuals, condominiums, building cooperatives, a nursing home) ranges from a minimum of 30 euros to a maximum of 1,700. The sums are modest given that these are areas that do not have a single owner, but several dozen. The areas are located between the streets of Golfo di Taranto, via Lago di Nemi, via Lago di Viverone, via Lago di Montepulciano and other streets in the Salinella district.

The final project developed by Asset envisaged an amount of 8 million euros. The intervention is a necessary and sufficient condition not only for the Games but also to ensure that residents no longer have traffic compromised in the event of (heavy) rain and can thus live in conditions of greater safety. Three years before the approval of the final project, in 2020, the technical and economic feasibility study was approved for what is literally defined as “hydraulic safety intervention of the Cep Salinella neighborhood and surrounding areas – functional excerpt”. And subsequently, a first batch worth 4 million was identified.

On 16 July 2021, the Ministry of Infrastructure had financed the 4 million necessary to cover the part of the intervention of the first lot, committing to transfer the funds directly to the Municipality of Taranto. Furthermore, on the occasion of the reprogramming of resources of the Institutional Development Contract (CIS) amounting to 40 million 500 thousand euros, the Municipality had submitted an application for funding for two environmental recovery and redevelopment projects in the Salinella district which fall within the program called «Italia City Branding 2020″.

Subsequently, with a resolution of the Cipess, on 22 December 2021 the municipal administration was allocated the additional 4 million necessary to complete the intervention.

The two lots, although financed by different sources, relate to a single project which, moreover, must be carried out in a coordinated manner. Six months ago, moreover, the same Municipality in the resolution with which it had given the green light to the definitive project underlined that «the work is preparatory to ensuring the conditions for the regular conduct of the “XX Mediterranean Games – Taranto 2026”, with particular reference to the redevelopment of the “Erasmo Iacovone” stadium, falling within the perimeter of the Cep Salinella”, for which a sum close to 40 million euros was indicated as part of the master plan.
