Posidonia reappears on the coastal beaches

Thursday 09 May 2024 – 08:30

During this period they were reported numerous accumulations of algae on the beach of the Pisan coastespecially to Calambrone; the formation of these stranded biomasses led the director ofEnvironment Office of the Municipality of Pisa to sign a document which from today indicates the management procedures for Posidonia algae in the event of its strandinggiven that its quantity stranded on the coast of Pisa is decidedly higher than in previous years.

The procedures to be adopted respect the survival of the stranded Posidonia because its accumulation on the beaches protects them from erosion and this algae is a fundamental element for the correct functioning of the marine ecosystem in which it is established.

Accordingly, the Municipality of Pisa has implemented the national and European directives for the correct management of these marine biomasses.

The main objective indicated by the municipal administration is to manage the material near the stranding area, avoiding its transfer to landfill as much as possible; the preferable solution is that of keep biomass on siteotherwise it is possible lthe burial of the same a short distance from the shoreline or, in the event that the positioning of the Posidonia is an obstacle to normal daily tourist actions, the preferred solution is that of displacement of the accumulations on the beach behind the stranding point.

In the case of the Calambrone beach, for the stretch of beach that goes from the spillway canal in a northerly direction, the renaturalized area that extends for 300 meters north of the northern pier of the new armed mouth of the canal can be identified as a relocation site.
