agreement between the Municipality and the Archdiocese

Culture in the city has 32 new spaces available: the the municipality of Naples el’Archdiocese of the Campania capital have stipulated a Convention for the enhancement and use of the spaces of as many churches, through the creation of events and cultural activities. The agreement, we read in a note from the Municipality of Naples, «represents an important piece for the policy adopted by the municipal administration, which already pays particular attention to the more decentralized municipalities, investing more funds in the suburbs than in the center. The main objective of the collaboration is to promote and spread the artistic and cultural offer in the peripheral neighborhoods of Naples, contributing to the regeneration of local identities and the active participation of citizens in cultural life”.

«This agreement is perfectly in line with the administration’s vision of creating a polycentric Naples, which aims at the social and cultural development of the entire city. The Municipality and the Archdiocese – explains the mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi – share the common objective of making sacred places accessible to carry out cultural activities, promoting the valorisation of the historical and artistic heritage of the entire city and at the same time offering new opportunities for meeting and sharing for Neapolitans as well as for tourists. This innovative synergy favors a balance between the conservation of the religious value of the places and the promotion of culture, for us a fundamental tool for the growth of the territory. Through this collaboration we further reduce territorial inequalities, confirming the high potential of all the city’s neighborhoods. We have also accepted the requests of associations and cultural bodies, often in difficulty due to lack of space, and who now – concludes the mayor – thanks to this protocol will be able to work in evocative contexts of great historical-artistic value”.

«Through the creation of events in the spaces of the churches belonging to the Archdiocese, the aim is to create a shared program that includes different forms of artistic expression, such as temporary exhibitions, works of art, musical, dance and theatrical performances and more. Thanks to the availability of the parish priests and the support of the Archdiocese of Naples, it will be possible to organize a vast and diversified artistic and cultural offering, involving the parishes belonging to the deaneries – we read in the note Deanery 05, Vomero – Colli Aminei – Camaldoli; Deanery 06, Vasto – Business Center – Poggioreale; Deanery 07, Doganella – Secondigliano – S. Pietro a Patierno; Deanery 08, Scampia – Piscinola – Chiaiano – Miano; Deanery 09, limited to Ponticelli – Barra – S.Giovanni a Teduccio. The identified churches, many of which have theatres, sports fields, parking and refreshment areas, will become part of a network, through which the Administration will be able to expand and extend the cultural offers of Napleswith important repercussions also on the areas directly affected. The agreement provides, in fact, for the signing of understandings, agreements and partnerships with local actors, in order to encourage synergies and partnerships that go beyond the simple conservation of the historical-artistic heritage of the city, also acting on the urban, building, environmental and social”.

«The vision we are aiming for is that of a city that does not have a single centre, restoring the complexity, stratification and connections of the real urban fabric – explains the coordinator of cultural policies of the Municipality of Naples -. Each neighborhood has its own specificities, these resources must be able to communicate with each other and be made accessible to all citizens. The availability of new spaces also represents an important contribution to the growth and development of many realities, which in this way will be able to become protagonists of the ferment now recognized at a national and international level in our territory”. Don Antonio Loffredo, director of the Diocesan Museum of the Archdiocese of Naples, speaks of an important opportunity for cultural diffusion especially for those suburbs of the city where inhabitants usually have to travel to access art, music and culture: «With these project actions even the suburbs they will feel centered. First of all because they are at the center of a renewed activism of citizens, who will be able to enjoy the musical and artistic performances of many important names from the world of music, art and culture. Thus, our churches, in addition to being a sacred space, can become a holy space, that is, a place in which man is built in the cultural as well as cultic dimension, because, as a father of the Church – Saint Irenaeus of Lyon – says – the glory of God he is the living man.”
