The regional government has sent to Rome the dossier for the national emergency declaration of the drought in Sicily expected next week. Details on the proposed works.
The regional government has just sent all the documentation necessary to obtain the declaration of a national state of emergency due to the drought in Sicily. The dossier outlines the solutions to stem the water crisis proposed by the ‘control room’, established and chaired by Schifani and coordinated by the head of the regional civil protection, Salvatore Cocina. The Council of Ministers will decide on the merits next week, allocating, if an emergency is declared, the first funds for the most urgent interventions. Among the rapidly implemented works are: the purchase of new tankers for Sicilian municipalities in crisis, the regeneration of wells and springs, and the strengthening of existing pumping systems and pipelines. In the medium term, the restructuring and restarting of the Porto Empedocle watermaker, and then one of the two in Trapani and Gela, is being evaluated. In the meantime, the Civil Protection has set up nine ‘technical tables’ at the Civil Engineering Department of the capitals of each province with representatives of the Water Department, the Reclamation Consortia, and the Basin Authority. Furthermore, several meetings were held with Siciliacque, Aica Agrigento, Caltacque and Acque Enna.
