Extortion of an entrepreneur from the province of Messina, two arrests

The Carabinieri of the Taormina Company have carried out an order for the application of the precautionary measure in prison, issued by the GIP of the Court of Messina, against a 48-year-old and an 80-year-old, both residents in the province of Catania. The 48-year-old has already been definitively convicted of mafia-type association. Both are accused of extortion aggravated by the mafia method.

The operation is the result of an investigation conducted by the DDA of the Messina Prosecutor’s Office, coordinated with precision by the Carabinieri of the Operational Division of the Taormina Company and of the Sant’Alessio Siculo and Roccella Valdemone (ME) stations. The investigation began after the complaint of an entrepreneur resident in the province of Messina, victim of extortion.

The suspects, according to what emerged from the investigation, would have forced the entrepreneur, a former supermarket manager, to purchase meat from a company they knew, thus guaranteeing commissions. They would subsequently extort cash, claiming the presence of a non-existent debt, evoking the 80-year-old’s membership of the Laudani mafia clan.

The two allegedly threatened the entrepreneur and his family, forcing them to hand over money on several occasions, including in Catania, and even during the 80-year-old’s period of house arrest for similar crimes. The total sum extorted is around 6,000 euros, in addition to the payment for meat supplies.

Furthermore, the 80-year-old is also accused of false identity certification, having obtained a residence certificate for the victim by posing as a lawyer.

Both are now being held in prison awaiting trial.
