TREVISO – B&Bs practically sold out, hotels full, difficulty finding places in restaurants, trattorias and various farmhouses. And again: streets and squares of the city crossed in every direction by crowds of tourists and satisfied shopkeepers. Passing through Piazza dei Signori at this time means immersing yourself in a varied humanitypint among a buzz of dialect accents and all different languages. «The “long weekend” of April 25th began with a bang – Mayor Mario Conte rejoices – Treviso is full of tourists. An immense satisfaction.” And the data proves him right: 98% of the non-hotel structures in the city, therefore B&Bs and tourist locations such as short-term rental apartments, are all occupied. Compared to last year, there are 5% more tourists. And the same goes for hotels: «We are very satisfied – admits Giovanni Cher, president of the Treviso hoteliers – I don’t have the precise data yet, but the first signs are very good. Our facilities are full, everyone is working well. Easter was subdued due to the bad weather. Climatic conditions, in our sector, also affect up to 30%. But this bridge meets expectations.”

Boom in tourists: «More facilities sold out»

The same optimism also comes from Giulia Casagrande, president of the Marca Treviso Foundation: «Given that the statistics are provided only by the booking platforms and therefore are not very precise – she begins – I can certainly say that Treviso and the UNESCO area of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, in this bridge, are doing very well as regards the hotel extras, the so-called b&b, with multiple sold-out facilities. Now we are also waiting for the data for May 1st: there is still a bit of quiet, but many bookings will be last minute and it also depends a lot on the weather». Positive signals also come from Ascom: «At this time there are very few structures that still have beds available – says Federico Capraro, president of the Treviso district of Ascom – confirming high occupancy. These April and autumn are historically our weekends, those where art cities work best. This year they are also favored by a climate that discourages the sea and therefore cities like ours take advantage of it. There have also been some cancellations here due to the low temperatures of these days, but there have been very few otherwise we would truly be talking about a full house everywhere. Treviso and the Marca confirm themselves as popular destinations and the data is positive. We are in line with expectations and the trends for the season look very good.”

Tourism, what to do in the city?

In the chorus of positive comments comes the request that pushes the bar a little higher: «Now – say the categories and associations – we have to work to bring people to the city also from Monday to Thursday, not just on weekends and public holidays.” The topic is well present in Mayor Conte’s agenda: «One step at a time we will get there – he assures – in the meantime, also thanks to the promotional work done with Ryanair, we have a constant flow of tourists practically all year round. Previously, a lot of work was done in the peaks, during the spring or autumn. Now, thanks to promotions and flights, all months of the year are covered. And this is also thanks to the calendar of events: in the next few weeks we will have events such as the Topolino Rugby Trophy, the Deejay Ten, the Treviso in Rosa which will guarantee attendance. I’m pleased that hoteliers, restaurateurs and traders are satisfied, they too are doing a great job and are an important attraction for our city. Now we must work hard to guarantee attendance even during the first days of the week.” And if on the weekend work is essentially guaranteed by the droves of arriving tourists, policies for the university and those for increasing residential numbers will be fundamental to fill the city during the rest of the week: «On this we are working with various projects. Then in Treviso we must also bring back the presences linked to business tourism. This represents the second step to take as a city.” Many other things then need to be fixed, such as avoid the closure of shops and restaurants during tourist periods like mid-August: «I am convinced that traders and restaurateurs will be able to organize themselves – assures the mayor – and I think that the increase in tourist presences in every month of the year will lead to a better distribution of openings and closings of the various activities».
