Rovigo, May Day in Piazza Matteotti

ROVIGO – Appointment in Piazza Matteottias per tradition, for the Workers Day. The program was illustrated at the CISL headquarters in Rovigo by the provincial secretaries of CGIL, CISL and UIL Pieralberto Colombo, Samuel Scavazzin And Gino Gregnaninthat the First of May will attend the event starting from 5pm. This year’s theme, decided by the trade unions at national level, is “Let’s build together a Europe of peace, work and social justice”.

“We will talk about Europe, in view of the elections on 8 and 9 June – he began Scavazzin – I take this opportunity to underline the importance of going to vote and exercising this constitutional right and duty. The national event will be held in Monfalcone, close to the border and an area of important construction sites. On May 1st in Piazza Matteotti we will reiterate those concepts summarized by our national secretariats, bringing them into our reality.

We know that ongoing conflicts in Europe and beyond have a profound impact on our economy. A Europe in which there is no peace, there is not even fair work and social justice for everyone, neither for active workers nor for those who are retired. It will be an important moment, not to be underestimated, because certain ideas can return from the past even in these years and we must create the conditions for a better Europe, a better Italy, a better Veneto and a better Polesine”.

Next Wednesday, in Piazza Matteotti, the speeches of the secretaries will be alternated with the music of the groups Dalbenzi, Alysson And Ukulele Lovers. The delegates of CGIL, CISL and UIL will also speak.

“We will start from the peace and wars that we experience every day, hoping that this peace will exist, between Palestine and Israel, between Russia and Ukraine and for all the wars, within Europe and beyond – he said Gregnanin – But we will also talk about the problems of the country and the territory. The latest economic and financial document approved by the government says nothing about the welfare state, but cuts healthcare and pensions. We must overcome the precariousness of poor and low-profile work, aiming for permanent work. We must intervene on wages, also because in Polesine we have the lowest incomes at a regional level. We must encourage quality work in Veneto, according to the pact signed by CGIL, CISL and UIL. We must intervene on the issue of health and safety, which is a priority for us, despite the plurality of ideas. The number of deaths in Italy and Veneto speaks of a civil war, with murders in all respects, on which we must keep our guard up, in terms of services and controls and also of safety culture”.

He concluded Columbus: “May 1st remains an important event for celebrating and valorising work. This year we are even more happy to celebrate it in Piazza Matteotti, given that it is the centenary of the murder of this great precursor on the themes of the celebrations, peace and social justice and Europe. The valorisation of Europe is important because the wind that is blowing risks making a sovereignist and populist idea prevail which can be dangerous. We think that Europe must return to looking at work and social justice and not just finance. With such a stringent stability pact, the risk is that we end up tightening the welfare state even more, which is what is needed to reduce inequalities. And it is difficult for there to be social justice and inclusion without peace. In a war economy, it is always the weakest who pay. We think that Europe must also commit itself to this on the peace front. We will also send a message of solidarity for one of the many crises affecting companies in our area, that of the Vittoria construction site, which puts 70 jobs in danger.”
