The men in charge of maintenance of the Pedemontana Lombarda motorway who were passing by with their vehicle to check the state of the roadway in the direction of Villa Guardia reported that something was wrong, in the middle of the night when it was three o’clock between Thursday and Friday. .
Beyond the guardrail, there were two bodies lying on the ground of two young boys, both who did not respond to calls.
The highway and ambulances
In this way the alarm was raised (in code red, the one that indicates maximum severity) which allowed the lives of two people to be saved, who later turned out to be a boy and a girl arriving from Switzerland, who were already in a state of hypothermia and in danger of life.
Decisive for the successful outcome of this story which could otherwise have been dramatic was the immediate arrival on site of the patrol from the Como section of the traffic police who then also alerted two 118 ambulances, one arriving from the Croce Azzurra of Como and one from the Red Cross of Lurago Marinone.
The point of the intervention is located in the section called “Como Ring Road”. The two young people suffering from hypothermia, both 29 years old and arriving from the Swiss Confederation, may have reached that point on foot given that no parked vehicles or crashed cars were found nearby. However, the investigation into what the boys were doing at that point and what then led them to be found and rescued lying on the ground is still ongoing, carried out by officers of the Como Traffic Police who in the meantime have also acquired the video cameras of surveillance present at that point, in an attempt to reconstruct the movements of the boys.
The certainty as of now is that the two were on foot and that they reached that point on foot, it is not known whether passing through the fields or walking along the motorway where, however, they would have been seen and reported by other motorists. The alarm was raised when it was 3 in the morning. The two twenty-nine year olds were loaded urgently and in code red – their lives were in danger – onto the ambulances and were then taken with sirens blaring to the emergency room of the Sant’Anna hospital in San Fermo where they were admitted. Already yesterday morning, however, the clinical picture had significantly improved and the Swiss boys were no longer considered life-threatening by the doctors.
Rebuild their path
However, a few more minutes of delay in the night’s surgery would have been enough to write a whole different story. At the time of the rescue by the traffic police and 118 (with the dispatch of two medical vehicles) the Swiss boys were in fact in a state of unconsciousness.
The point of the intervention is located in a green area between meadows and fields, among other things, a few tens of meters as the crow flies from where the 118 air ambulance takes off. The Swiss authorities have also been informed of the happened.
