Modena, 27 April 2024 – He approached slowly, dragging his bicycle and observing, with his eyes filled with tears and suffering clothes soaked in his brother’s blood, remained on the road and ‘numbered’ following the police inspection of the crime scene. “He shouldn’t have died like this, they killed him,” shouted the brother of Jaouad, Mohamed, arrived on site yesterday.

“I was in the mosque, in Modena, when they warned me that something bad had happened to my brother. They told me: ‘he arrived in via Casette Zanasi, they hurt him. My brother had been away, in Morocco, he had just returned to Italy, for five months I think – Mohamed further explained – he had returned for his children, for his family, he wanted to sort things out. I had seen him these days, we should have gone to the lawyer together: he had asked me to accompany him. He lived with me now and I don’t understand what happened – he continues – they knew each other (with the suspects, ed.), we are fellow villagers. I don’t know why they were angry with him, I don’t understand what happened in that house – she underlined in tears -. He was young, strong, muscular, my brother: he was handsome and good, he shouldn’t have died like this”.
Yesterday, next to Mohamed there was also the granddaughter: “He was nice, he made me laugh, he played with me – commented the girl in tears –. I can’t understand how it is possible that he is no longer here.”
Another ambulance arrived on site yesterday afternoon to assist the victim’s relatives who, understandably, were taken ill.
“Everyone knew each other here – the victim’s relatives underlined – they may have argued but no one was angry with Jaouad: he was a good person and loved everyone.” The 37-year-old had arranged to meet his brother for 4pm yesterday afternoon: it is plausible that the ‘visit’ to those who became his murderers was not scheduled.
“Maybe they argued and then he joined them to talk – other acquaintances of the victim surmised – nothing like this has ever happened in that building: we are shocked.”
