The history of 1901 Piombino Livorno.
“Imagine, for a moment, finding yourself in 1901, precisely in one of the most wonderful territories in the world,
the coast of Tuscany. We are an adventurous nineteenth-century character who possesses one of the greatest wonders ever conceived, a carriage that moves with mechanical magic. They watch us pass like sorcerers,
for many we are people sitting on a devilry that moves without horses! Ultimately man’s fear of
what he doesn’t know or is not curious to know is an evil that we have always carried. Our character smiles with his long mustache as he passes through small towns to reach his destination, Grosseto.
A special event was supposed to start from here, the first motor race ever held in Tuscany, one of the very first
races in Italy and throughout the world. The Grand Prix of Majesty of him, the King of Italy. Together with us, other noble and courageous gentlemen are reaching Grosseto with their two, three and four-wheeled vehicles. They come from everywhere
of Italy! Along the way we are warned that it is impossible to reach our departure destination in
as the roads in front of us are impassable due to the heavy rains that have been raging for days. The Judges
of the race they opt to move the start to Piombino and a legend will be born from this city; the Piombino-Livorno. From Piombino we set off towards what can be called a real adventure along
dusty and muddy beaten roads. Danger turns into adrenaline. We are pioneers and our goal is
arrive in Livorno before the other noble mechanical knights to win the King’s medals and also the prizes
granted by Michelin, sponsor of the event.”
The vehicles entered in the race were divided into categories: I category large cars (over 1,000 kg), II category
light cars (less than 1,000 kg), III category small cars (up to 450 kg), IV category tricycles and V category motorcycles. The departure began in the following order: large cars, tricycles, light cars, small cars, motorcycles.
No motorcycle reached the finish line: Renzo Mazzoleni on Ceirano 2 ¼ HP retired near Vada and
Emanuele Rosselli on a Rosselli 2 ¼ HP of his own construction retired shortly after the start due to impracticability
of the road.
