The Accidents at work they continue to be a widespread plague throughout Italy, which in the first two months of 2024 saw the numbers grow almost everywhere, as reported by Inail.

In Piedmont cases increase by over 10%

The territorial analysis highlights an increase in accident reports in the first two months of the year, most significant in the North-West (+10.2%), followed by the Center (+7.5%), North-East (+5, 9%), Islands (+4.8%) and South (+4.2%). Among the regions with the greatest percentage increases are the autonomous province of Trento (+19.3%), Lombardy (+11.6%), Umbria (+11.1%) and Piedmont (+10.4%), while Abruzzo and Basilicata are the only ones to record a decline (-2.2% and -1.2% respectively).

More accidents between men and non-EU citizens

The increase that emerges from the comparison of the first two months of 2023 and 2024 is linked both to the female component, which recorded a +6.4% (from 31,867 to 33,902 reported cases), and to the male component, which recorded a +7.7% (from 54,616 to 58,809).

The increase affected both Italian workers (+6.6%) and non-EU workers (+12.4%), while EU workers recorded a decrease of 0.8%. The analysis by age group shows generalized increases in all age groups, especially in those up to 14 years of age (+28.5%) due to the increase in accidents among students. The range between 45 and 49 years is the only one to record a decline (-0.7%).

Deaths fall in Piedmont and Veneto

From the territorial analysis, however, data of a different nature also emerge regarding deaths at work in the first two months of 2024. The numbers are increasing in the South (from 14 to 24 cases), in the Islands (from 6 to 11), in North-West (from 35 to 39) and in the North-East (from 22 to 24) and a decrease in the Center (from 23 to 21). Among the regions with the greatest increases are Lombardy (+8), the autonomous province of Bolzano and Campania (+6 each), Lazio (+5) and Sicily (+4), while for the most evident drops Veneto (-8) and Piedmont (-6).

The increase detected in the comparison of the two-month periods January-February 2023 and 2024 is linked both to the male component, whose reported fatal cases went from 93 to 110, and to the female component, from seven to nine.

The age group between 45 and 54 is the most affected

Complaints from Italian workers (from 84 to 89), non-EU workers (from 14 to 23) and EU workers (from 2 to 7) increased. The analysis by age group records increases among 30-39 year olds (from 8 to 16 cases) and between 45-54 year olds (from 22 to 37) and between 65-74 year olds (from 6 to 14) and decreases, in particular , among those under 30 (from 15 to 8).
