“The role of physiotherapy in sport is to give quick and precise answers to the athlete, our patient. In the case of ‘concussion’, our task is to make it safe as soon as possible. The sports physiotherapist must therefore have problem solving and decision making skills that are much faster and more efficient than the classic setting in which we find ourselves working in the studio or hospital”. Dr. Miriam Rosa, president of the Specialist Interest Group (GIS) in Sports Physiotherapy of the Italian Association of Physiotherapy (AIFI), explains it.
His words come a few days after the congress entitled ‘Concussion in sports’, hosted in the Aula Magna of the Le Scotte polyclinic in Siena. The meeting was born from the collaboration with the University of the Tuscan city and Professor Silvia Bielli, coordinator of the Master in Physiotherapy applied to Sport, with the aim of providing knowledge to understand, know how to recognise, frame and manage up to ‘ return to performance’ the concussion sports injury ‘from the field to the field’.
“Concussion – informs the expert – is a trauma that is not visible from an external point of view, but which can also leave very disabling consequences for our athletes. During the congress we therefore discussed the roles of the different figures and the importance of responding specifically to this type of sports injury. Our event therefore sought to bring more knowledge about this type of trauma, precisely because greater knowledge leads to a better possibility of giving a quicker, more certain and more reliable response to our patients.”
“The day of the conference – continues Miriam Rosa – brought together various figures in Siena, including a doctor, Doctor Vassalli, involved in the first intervention on the pitch, Doctor Fronzoni, physiotherapist of the Italian national rugby team, and Doctor Re, doctor physiatrist who deals with the evaluation of the outcomes of this type of trauma”.
At the end of the day there was an interesting round table, in which Paolo Buonfiglio, professional player of the Zebre di Parma rugby team and Carlo Damasco, professional FIR referee, also took part. “To enrich the Round Table – concludes Rosa – two remote connections: one by the neuropsychologist Aiace Rusciano, who focused on ‘Neuroenhancement Strategies in the development of the post-concussion athlete’s performance’, and the other by the American neurophysiologist JJ Leddy , who held a Lectio Magistralis on the topic ‘Post concussion symptoms: early phase vs long standing symptoms’”.
The working day in Tuscany was the opportunity to host the elective assembly of Gis Sport, which elected the new management group. Miriam Rosa has been confirmed as president of AIFI’s GIS Sport. At his side in the next three years will be Filippo Oliva (vice president and training), Gianmarco Verbana (secretary), Elisa Ciavarelli (treasurer), Bianca Parise (certification), Francesco Ciaghi (projects), Giuseppe Zolla (academy), Nicola Ferri (research), Francesco Orlano (communication).
