A 101-year-old woman presented to the Bassini Hospital in Cinisello with a fracture of the femoral neck which required emergency intervention; the team of orthopedists and anesthetists led by Roberto Vanelli, director of Orthopaedics, and Angelo Pezzi, director of Anesthesia and Resuscitation carried out the operation, sedating the woman with total anesthesia and replacing the head of the femur.
After Sun 36 hours later the lady took her first steps in the department followed by Elena Parolo, Rehabilitation director. «The surgery was a perfect success – declared Roberto Vanelli -, without complications, thanks to the teamwork and consolidated experience of our teams. Such an early resumption of walking in elderly patients depends on several factors including timely surgical treatment, fundamental nursing care in terms of general care, specialized nursing and collaboration with physiotherapists for early mobilization and the fundamental role of anesthetists in the management of pain.”
