The bar for reading lovers opens

by Camilla Mondini

We are in the Corti di Medoro area (formerly Palazzo degli Specchi), a space now full of commercial activities and residents. There are 144 apartments for a total of around 600 people in addition to the commercial activities, says Giulia Alice Cristofori, owner of the “L’angolo del caffè” bar. A bar that hides a story of passion and courage.

In fact, after completing her law studies, Giulia decided to open her own business. “After completing my studies, I realized that it wasn’t the right path for me – she says -. I love interacting with the public and being among people. I undertook this activity precisely for this reason and chatting with my friend Michela I decided to give life to the project we are presenting today”.

How many times, when you finish a book, do you end up leaving it dusty on the bookshelf? Or even risk forgetting it? It is precisely from this concept that the “from books to life” project starts.

“The idea is that everyone donates to this space the books they have already read or forgotten on the library. – explains Giulia – I think it can be a way of being together and sharing interesting food for thought even among strangers. My bar is not just a place where you have a coffee or an aperitif, I would like it to become a place where you can promote the importance of social interactions in a society that increasingly leads us towards communication behind screens. We have experienced difficult years due to the pandemic and I think that young people, also out of necessity, have found comfort in an excessive use of social media. It is important to involve all age groups in socializing and face-to-face discussion. Behind a book there is not only the person who reads it but also, and above all, an experience.”

One of the first books to arrive in the local bookshops was “Cose di Cosa Nostra” by Falcone, a book that Giulia remembers with particular emotion given her degree thesis on the topic of 41-bis.

Also present at the meeting was Riccardo Bizzarri, accompanied by some representatives of the UDC, who immediately embraced the project: “For some time now I have become Giulia’s “neighbor” because I have an office here and he often told me that he wanted the his bar also had a social function. Every day I come here to have coffee precisely because it gives me the idea of conviviality and family. I think the idea of giving books a second life is a winning one and I really appreciate and admire her story and her courage.”
