TERNI The last cold of the season has once again put the emergency room of the Terni hospital on alert. Last Monday, the number of accesses recorded at the time of Covid was almost reached: 190 and then dropped to 150 the following day and rose again to 180. It was the fault of the tail end of winter which put dozens of elderly people and even children who complained of sore throat and fever. For the elderly, however, the rush to the hospital was necessary due to the flare-up of their ailments. The arrival of the pollen season has also contributed to an increase in emergency access due to allergies which have affected a large portion of the population with people with respiratory problems being hospitalized for several days. «Despite this set of overlapping things – claims Massimo Rizzo, responsible for the complex structure of the healthcare management – we are able to guarantee a place in the ward in an acceptable timeframe». Nothing to do, as happened in the past, with waiting days for a hospital bed to become available, also thanks to the agreement between Local Health Authority 2 and Santa Maria for the transfer of non-serious patients who however still need assistance and treatment at the internal medicine of Narni hospital. In the month of May, the renovation and modernization works of “Le Grazie” in Viale Trieste will also be completed and the hospital will be able to have additional beds available, reducing the wait in the emergency room even less. However, the situation for the weekend is at risk due to the probable assault on the emergency room due to the two holidays on the calendar (25 April and 1 May) and the weekend. These days patients are at risk of going to the emergency room in large numbers because general practitioners are not on duty due to the long bridge. «Breaks are part of our employment contract – explains a general practitioner – if necessary the patient can contact the continuity of care doctors (formerly on call)». However, the risk exists that many people may go directly to the emergency room instead of going to the doctor first, they feel calmer and safer in the hospital. The medical guard is active from 8pm every weekday and from 8am on Saturdays and pre-holiday days to 8am on the day following the public holiday. Meanwhile from Palazzo Donini there is a green light to balance the accounts of healthcare companies and unlock investments. Of the package of 94 million euros divided between the 4 healthcare companies, 4 million euros will arrive in Terni which will be used for the adaptation of the fire prevention systems which are particularly necessary for the hospital as the structure is built on six floors. Not only money for firefighting but also for the safety of Obito Hill, the hill where the hospital stands which in past years was affected by a landslide above state road 79 which connects the city also in anticipation of the runway landing of the 118 helicopter rescue.
