Latina will host the European Sports Village from 23 to 30 September 2024. The decision was shared by the Pontine municipalities, namely Sabaudia, Terracina, Fondi, Maenza, Priveno, Pontinia, San Felice and Formia, which together with the capital were awarded the title of European Community of Sport 2024, with the name of Comunità Pontina dello Sport.
This is a recognition from Aces, a non-profit association based in Brussels which since 2001 has been awarding the titles of Region, Capital, Community, European City of Sport, with the aim of promoting sport among the citizens of the European Union, in particular towards children, the elderly and the disabled.
“The European Sports Village – stated the mayor Matilde Celentano – will be set up in the historic center of Latina, within the perimeter of the pedestrian area and will be open to all sports organizations of the municipalities belonging to the Pontine Community and of the entire province . As mayor of the capital, I am very proud to be able to host an event of this scale, which will see the participation of thousands of people from different centers to promote sport in all its forms”.
For the current year, in Italy, Aces has awarded the title of Community of Sport, as well as four other entities (Cuore di Valtellina, Terra dei due Laghi, Flegra dello Sport and Maremma Toscana Sud), as well as the title of Region Veneto is the European Capital of Sport and the city of Genoa is the European Capital of Sport. “Our Pontine Community is the only one in Lazio to have obtained a European title from Aces for 2024 – underlined the Sports Councilor of the Municipality of Latina Andrea Chiarato – I thank the administrations of the other eight Municipalities belonging to our community, in particular of the Municipality of Sabaudia which is the leader, who shared the choice to host the Sports Village in Latina. After the success of the European Sports Week, which we organized in the city last year, Latina raises the bar for next September with an inter-municipal event of international prestige. We are already working to organize this initiative in the best possible way.”
The European City of Sport Gala for the presentation of the Aces awards will take place on Monday 29 April in Rome, in the CONI hall of honor. “It will be an important opportunity and we will not miss it – stated Chiarato – As Councilor for Sport, I will take advantage of it to get to know more in depth the other Italian realities that have stood out among the various candidatures and European mechanisms in the field of sport”.
