Construction waste, old tyres, mountains of bags of common rubbish, animal carcasses, special demolition waste, end-of-life machines and even dangerous substances such as asbestos, lead batteries and used oil: in the outskirts of Terni you can find everything. Since the beginning of the year, police checks to combat waste abandonment have led to numerous complaints and reports worth over 79 thousand euros.
Abandonment of waste The favorite areas for those who want to illegally get rid of unwanted waste are the streets just outside the city, “almost always in countryside areas”, explain the police. The result is that “micro landfills are created in many places in the Municipality of Terni”. From the control and monitoring activities, since the beginning of the year, the military has sent 30 reports of crime to the Prosecutor’s Office and issued numerous administrative sanctions. Overall, the violations found amount to the sum of 79,500 euros.
Sanctions «From October 2023, the abandonment and uncontrolled storage of waste, carried out by a municipality, is no longer punished with an administrative sanction, but rather criminally. The crime is extinguished by carrying out correct disposal and paying the far from negligible sum of €2,500 in the case of non-hazardous waste and €5,000 in the case of hazardous waste. It should be noted that the materials you wish to get rid of can be given free of charge to the municipal waste centers of the municipality of Terni, thus avoiding both environmental degradation and sanctions, and yet, in some cases, it is incredible to see in which places inaccessible, someone manages to throw away old appliances and other things when a phone call could be enough to have them collected at their home”.
