Prevention: the “Vittoria For Women” project against breast cancer

Several centuries have passed since, in the second half of the seventeenth century, the doctor Bernardino Ramazzini da Carpi exclaimed that “Prevention is far better than cure”.

An unshakeable truth even today, even more so thanks to new discoveries that allow increasingly numerous and accurate preventions, saving the lives of many people. The project is also part of all this Vittoria For Women – The Numbers of Prevention, created by Vittoria Assicurazioni, in collaboration with the Italian Rugby Federation and the Specchio dei Tempi Foundation. In fact, before the Italy-Scotland match, played on Saturday 20 April, the Italian Women’s Rugby team wore, in the pre-match, a special, almost “talking” shirt, in order to raise awareness among the population of the fundamental importance of disease prevention female oncologists. With a claim that summed up the project well: “The numbers of Azzurre, for the numbers of prevention”.

In fact, every Italian rugby player wore a shirt imprinted with a number which also represented an official data, in order to highlight the importance not only of prevention, but also of adopting virtuous measures.

For example, 6 corresponds to the 6 million people who were saved thanks to prevention. Or 9, like the women who, out of every ten, survive breast cancer. It takes 10 minutes to do the self-examination and in 8 out of ten cases breast cancer starts with a lump. Every 2 years you must have a mammogram to prevent cancer and there are 3 essential screenings to prevent female cancers. Messages, these, together with others (23 in total), to highlight the crucial role of prevention.

Not only that, until the end of the match played by the Italian players, the VittoriaBus was present outside the Lanfranchi stadium in Parma, which acts both as a prevention center and as a traveling information center and which was purchased thanks to a fundraiser started last year.

Managed by the Specchio dei Tempi Foundation, the Vittoria Bus has made it possible, like a medical room, to allow many women to have a free breast examination. Speaking of the fundraiser: it was reopened with the personalized jerseys of the Italian rugby players which were auctioned off. In addition to the post-match match on April 20th in Parma, there will be other opportunities to win them. In fact, the Vittoria for Women Tour which predicts well six stagesthe first of which a Milano Marittima, next June 26th and the final one, in Campania, 27 July.

An important opportunity to carry out prevention directly in the area, to bring healthcare to the people, especially in those areas where the capillarity of prevention networks is insufficient. Considering that, last year, thanks to these initiatives, dozens of women, by virtue of these checks carried out in mobile clinics, were sent for immediate treatment. A preventive breast examination can really save the lives of many people.
