Update 5 pm: The President’s plane has left Syracuse and I-81 north has reopened Thursday evening, State Police said.

Motorists should still expect some delays on I-18 north. The New York Department of Transportation website is reporting traffic jams on I-81 near the airport.

Original Story:

Syracuse, NY – President Joe Biden’s departure from Syracuse will close a five-mile stretch of Interstate 81 North for the late afternoon commute Thursday.

I-81 North will be closed from I-690 to the Syracuse airport exit for around an hour.

The road was scheduled to be closed from 2:45 to 3:45 pm, state police had said. But Biden ran late and the motorcade did not leave downtown Syracuse until around 4:15 pm

I-81 Southbound near Cicero was backed up with near standstill traffic shortly after the president arrived. The traffic – which was exacerbated by construction in the area – has since cleared.

Traffic slowed to a near standstill on I-81 south near Route 481 just 5 minutes after President Joe Biden landed at the Syracuse Airport on Thursday, April 25, 2024.
