Sassari For the last time I have the honor of representing our city in the celebration of liberation, of freedom. Freedom that today we take for granted but which still today in the world must be defended by the blood of defenseless civilians, in Ukraine, in Israel and Palestine. For too many years, April 25th has been exploited and I too have succumbed to this, making a huge mistake. The time is certainly ripe for this to be everyone’s celebration.” So does the mayor Nanni Campus welcomed the procession organized by the Anpi together with many social and cultural realities of the city for the Liberation Day in the Municipality square. The first part of the official celebrations took place in the full square, with commemorative speeches given by the prefect, the president of the Sassari section of the ANPI, Thomas Arras. Then the speeches of two students, Angelica and Roberto, from the city’s secondary schools who took part in the “Auschwitz Reminder” project, promoted by Arci and the Deina association and financially supported by the municipal administration and the final speech of the mayor. “On April 25, 1945, our nation regained democracy and freedom. This celebration must unite us all and must perpetuate the memory of stories that we have the duty to pass on”, said the prefect Grazia La Fauci. “Freedom of speech and thought bothers fascists yesterday as today – said Arras – and this freedom must always be defended. One of fascism’s wicked choices was war. Yet history has taught us nothing and the cannon still thunders today. In Ukraine and Palestine. And, as always, it is the weakest who suffer.” The day ended with the ceremony of honoring the Fallen in the courtyard of Palazzo Ducale, where the plaque commemorating the date of 25 April 1945 was placed, before which the crowns of the Municipality and the Province were placed.
