WEDGE NEWS – A blue wave of over 10 thousand volunteers who with tenacity and determination, defying the adversities of the weather, dedicated a weekend to the Earth on the occasion of the 54th anniversary of Earth Day announced by the United Nations and this year dedicated to the theme “Planet vs Plastics”. The voluntary association Plastic Free Onlus, committed since 2019 to combating plastic pollution, has taken action in 288 environmental cleaning events throughout the national territory to which, for the first time, six initiatives have been added ‘abroad. Thanks to the commitment of volunteers, a total of 121,534 kg of plastic and waste were removed from the environment, restoring life and splendor to beaches, parks, gardens, river banks and many other public areas.

Piedmont was also a protagonist with 17 initiatives across the region which saw the participation of 469 volunteers, who removed 20,130 kilos of plastic and waste from the environment, with record collections in Cuneo (8.2 tonnes) and Turin ( 5 tons).

“We thank the citizens who joined us in this weekend dedicated to the Earth – declares Giulia Zaccaro, Plastic Free regional representative – Seeing so many people together in the sign of concrete love for Nature gives joy and hope for an increasingly sustainable future free from the excess of plastic materials, which pollute our living environments. The enthusiasm, especially of the younger ones, allows us to continue with ever greater determination to engage in our awareness raising action which does not stop and continues, every week, in the squares and in the schools”.
