Naples, from Pietrarsa to Sanità boom in unusual places: «Reborn thanks to tourists»

Not only Plebiscite, seafront and Decumanthe. Tourists, in this permanent boom in visits, increasingly go in search of the unusual Parthenope, of lesser-known sites and ravines, even far from the centre. From the Vomero stairs to Pietrarsa or Campi Flegrei. The relocation of tourist flows is already a reality, even if it suffers from shortcomings in public transport.

In any case, there are many new trends: sports and urban tourism have now been added to the more traditional food and wine and cultural tours. Fiavet and accredited tourist guides confirm the trend. Dall‘urban trekking of the stairs of Naples to discover Healthcare, from the now famous mural of Maradona to the churches managed by associations, such as that of Santa Luciella or the San Vincenzo Pier.

The new tours

We start right from Molo San Vincenzo. Requests to visit the area close to Molosiglio are increasing – they argue from Fiavet – because the set of is set here “Sea Outside”. The demand therefore comes largely from Italian tourists. Among foreigners, however, walks to discover the Sanità are popular: a trek through the alleys, with the church of Sant’Aspreno ai Crociferi recently recovered and transformed into the Jago museum.

Staying on the topic of trekking, there is great demand for the Vomero stairs, above all the Pedamentina (Unesco heritage, between Corso Vittorio Emanuele and the San Martino viewpoint). As confirmed by Uiltucs-authorized tourist guides, it’s a boom for the Phlegraean Fields: Volcanological tourism is developing around bradyseism, which attracts foreign visitors (including Koreans). Among the most prosperous destinations there is also the railway museum of Pietrarsa, on the border with Portici. Visits to the Mostra d’Oltremare park are growing.

The reopening of the Girolamini and Monte Echia complex should not be forgotten, with the recent inauguration of the lift. As part of the tours “See Naples and then eat” organized by Teresa Armato’s municipal tourism department, they will soon be present in Monte Echia and on Sunday in Floridiana. Great success, then, for the pezzentelle souls and the skull with ears of Santa Luciella ai Librai, managed by Respiriamo Arte. From Fiavet they let it be known that there would be many requests to visit the Maradona stadium, but there is no museum. Some are content with a selfie outside the plant. Also on the rise are Virgliiano andBotanical Garden.

The voices

The crowds at the mural of Maradona in via De Deo et al Veiled Christ of Sansevero Chapel are always very numerous, but the sector operators themselves comment on the increasingly solid reality of tourist decentralization: «There are various areas of the city that have been rediscovered, such as the old Vomero with Sant’Elmo completely reopened, the Pedamentina stairs and the Villa Floridiana – begins Giuseppe Scanu, president of Fiavet Campania – Or the Phlegraean area with the Overseas Exhibition which in addition to a splendid park contains interesting examples of architecture and a little-known archaeological area in via Terracina.

Then there are areas that could host events without causing inconvenience, such as the Management Center. As for free Sundays in museums, it is a laudable initiative that has contributed greatly to the knowledge of our artistic heritage. But I would like to make a reflection: when Sunday coincides with a bridge, where there is already, fortunately, a consistent flow of visitors, I think it is worth planning to move the initiative, to also use it as a further attractor and incentive of tourism”.

Daniela De Vincenzoauthorized guide and Uiltucs representative, underlines that the success of a location often also depends on the infrastructure: «Lately it has been very popular Pietrarsa – he argues – a suitable and well-connected space has been created there thanks to line 2, after years of work on reception. On the churches there is greater attention to San Giovanni in Carbonarajust renovated.

Another itinerary that works is that of Porta Capuana, between the former Court and the ancient walls of the gateway to the city. Unfortunately the Fontanelle Cemetery has not yet reopened, and this leaves many requests unsatisfied. It should reopen soon, let’s hope it happens. There are also many requests on the Campi Flegrei, among others Cuma, Baia and Bacoli. Even now that the passage of buses from Arco Felice is prohibited, the Cumana road leads directly to Casina Vanvitelliana, and the area is well connected. There is a positive side to bradyseism: tourism of volcanological interest is developing around that area, in particular by foreigners, fascinated by this phenomenon.”
