Ultimo Miglio della Treviso Ostiglia dressed up with ribbons and ribbons for the celebrations of April 25th. Many foreign cycle excursionists stopped next to the corten barriers that secure the crossing of Strada dell’Airport in San Giuseppe

On the barrier the dedication to Father Nicolò Cortese, originally from the island of Cres, who paid a lot of attention to the internees in the Chiesanuova camp, most of whom were Slovenian. After the armistice, while anti-Jewish persecution intensified with the Nazi occupation, he was among those who helped the stragglers, the Jews and those wanted by the Nazi-fascist regime. He was arrested for a denunciation on 8 October 1944 and taken to a Gestapo cell in Trieste, he was subjected to torture and died during detention due to the torture he suffered. The body was cremated in the Risiera di San Sabba concentration camp. Irma Marchiani, 33 years old, shot in Pavullo, wrote shortly before being killed: “I felt the call of my homeland, the beautiful Italy for which I fought and I die sure of having done everything possible for freedom to triumph…” . This is why April 25th!

It is the celebration of liberation from the barbaric Nazi-fascist yoke which led 2 generations of Italians to die in the freezing cold of the Russian steppe, in the torrid desert of Africa, ending up in SS concentration camps and being burned in crematoria after torture ‘all sorts disguised as pseudo scientific research, Dr. Josef Mengele docet. This is why equating those who sacrificed themselves for everyone’s freedom with those who continued to wallow in barbarism is unacceptable. Anyone who now, having never abjured that nefarious past and rather boasts of it, claims to rewrite history by justifying, minimising, slyly silencing the truth must be stopped and stigmatized without hesitation whatsoever. We owe an enormous debt to those who gave their lives to give us back the freedom we now enjoy and we must honor that debt every day. A categorical imperative and it would be cowardly to avoid it.
