A window visibly broken, perhaps stoned, perhaps barred, glass fragments still on the ground and a blanket (it’s grey, a few days ago it was brown) leaning on the hole that allows you to climb over without cutting your hands: this is the image which returns the former headquarters of the former Superintendence of Studies in via Santa Margherita, a few steps from the historic center of Trento. Going up to the second floor of the University nursery, which is right in front, from a window you can see a makeshift living room built by the guests of the building “occupied for a couple of weeks now”, as confirmed by the school’s pedagogical contact of childhood. A few pairs of shoes on the right, a glass bottle of coke a little further on and some sleeping bags, or blankets, piled up to recreate the illusion of having a bed to sleep in and a roof over your head to protect yourself from the freezing temperatures nights of the last days. A situation that destabilizes and leads us to reflect on the underlying motivations. What drives these people to climb over a web of glass, risking injury, and then jump from a height of two meters and finally find shelter?
«What a strange fate – comments the pedagogical representative – some of our educators trained right there, in what was once the headquarters of the Education Authority». At 10 in the morning there is no one left inside the structure, those who live there try to sneak away at dawn so as not to be noticed and only return late in the evening. «They are our new neighbors», jokes an employee of the nursery who tries to play down a complex problem that «has already been made known to both the Municipality and the Province» states the pedagogical representative. «To the comings and goings of the last few days – he continues – are added a series of unpleasant events such as the drug dealing outside the nursery in broad daylight which was seen firsthand by a parent while bringing their child here». Not only that, not far from the nursery school, some balls of narcotic substance were also found, which were removed by the police with the help of canine units. Then there are “the dirt, the pee on the street, the nauseating smell, the tinfoil on the ground”: all elements that worry both educators and parents greatly because “the children also risk getting hurt”. Among the most impressive images, there is a photo taken last April 15th in the morning which immortalizes a hooded boy as he climbs over the door of the building and makes space between the sharp glass of the window, leaning on the “blanket-cushion”. The snapshot was promptly forwarded to the relevant person in the provincial offices, accompanied by a letter.
The administrative contact point out that «the Province and Municipality have already been contacted» and at the moment the response of a technician has confirmed that the situation is well known and that some inspections have been carried out with related interventions by the police who have taken steps to vacate the building.” The Province also informed that “the utilities have been deactivated” and that to “resolve the situation definitively we will have to wait for the start of the renovation of the property” expected in the next few months and which involves the transformation of the former Education Office building in the city’s archaeological center with adjoining ticket office for access to the Roman Villa of Orpheus. At the moment, however, the tender notice has not even been published.
