Traditional Anpi procession today in Catania on the occasion of the celebrations for April 25th. The procession started from Piazza Palestro, paid homage to the Catania partisans Graziella and Salvatore Giuffrida, continued along Via Garibaldi and then Via Etnea up to Piazza Stesicoro.
In Catania, a crowded procession on the occasion of April 25th is underway along the streets of the center. Many banners and flags. From the Anpi, to the CGIL, from the Democratic Party to the 5 Star Movement, from the Italian Left to the social centres, there is no shortage of those from Palestine to which many chants and slogans are dedicated.
But not everything went smoothly. An Israeli flag was burned in front of the municipal headquarters of the Etna capital.
And there was a controversy over a banner. «A magnificent day, clear of freedom, crowded around the monument of the Resistance, soiled by the usual 4 despotics who, representing only themselves, pretending to be organizers of the ANPI, blocked the PD banner, physically preventing us from starting the procession» , denounced secretary of the provincial Dem federation of Catania, Maria Grazia Leone, describing what happened this morning in the Etna capital, during the ceremony for the 79th anniversary of the Liberation.
«Discovered, they then railed against their comrades, demanding that we abandon the procession. Our thanks to the comrades of the Anpi, the Italian Left and all those who intervened to ensure the peaceful progress of the anniversary” added Leone.
Returning to the procession, the Gammazita Association also marched and after the demonstration extended the invitation to stay in the historic center to share a day of reflections, solidarity and celebration in the neighborhood that rises around the Ursino Castle. The common aim is to rediscover the humanity of yesterday’s partisans to repudiate any type of war as a tool for resolving conflicts dictated by economic interests and neo-fascist logic; discuss with the boys and girls about preparing for peace during a workshop and a reading; reflect with a theater show on the need to “not stay silent and raise your voice against all fascism”; oppose every form of hatred, discrimination and indifference advocated by the current government; always remain alongside the peoples who fight for freedom and all humanity.
«For this 25th April – they clarify – we could only choose to support the Palestinian population by embracing the “X Gaza Subito” Fundraising Campaign of the Ciss of Palermo – with the aim of giving concrete help to people who find themselves in inhumane conditions in the interior of the Strip. During the festival and in the following days it is possible to purchase the “Vivo. I’m Partigian*” whose proceeds will be entirely used to support the victims of the most documented genocide in history.”
Today in Piazza Federico di Svevia will still be a day of celebration, free and resistant, with free activities for adults and children.
