April 25, Ilaria Salis’s letter: “I hope that Italy is on the right side of history”

“I am proud that in my country the expulsion of the Nazi-fascists is remembered every year thanks to courageous struggle of male and female partisans. From my cell I ardently desire that my country shows itself every day at the height of its history, who today as in the past wants to oppose the injustice of the world and take the right side of history. Happy April 25th.” With these words, Ilaria Salis, the teacher from Brianza detained in Hungary, recalled the importance of Liberation Day. Father Roberto read them on stage at the Anpi event in Rome.

Upon his arrival at the event, Roberto Salis was welcomed by the «Ilaria libera» choir and by loud applause.
«I’m here for Ilaria, my daughter is anti-fascist and this is his home. I am here to represent her until she can come with her legs. Ilaria has already spent April 25th in prison, that of 2023, however we did not want to make his situation known for a series of reasons. This it must be the last one with her in prison».

«Ilaria was in Budapest for a counter-demonstration on the day of honora day in which the Nazis of Germany, Hungary, Poland and other nations come together to recall a heroic Nazi gesture – Roberto Salis then recalled from the stage of the event -. These are demonstrations that would be absolutely prohibited. In Hungary they are not only not contested but they are even financed by the Hungarian government with European funds». Then quoting Leonardo Sciascia, Salis added: «If you look at the well from above you can see the sun and the moon. If you want to see the truth you have to go to the bottom of the well. Ilaria already had a clear idea of ​​what the truth was, much better than me and many people and certainly enormously better than the Nazis who are imprisoning her in this way. Now there has been enough in the well and we need to get it out».
