Castellammare, protest in Savorito against the demolition of houses

Castellammare. The protest against the redevelopment project of the Savorito district begins. The associations “Giovani Arm”, led by Antonio Sessa, and “L’isola dei Ragazzi”, represented by Veronica Santaniello, will be at the center of the district on the eastern outskirts of Castellammare on Friday 26 April with a banquet to promote a collection of signatures and put the basis for the creation of a local committee that brings together all the families residing in the buildings that will be demolished during the first phase of the regeneration works of the Stabia neighborhood.

«We are with the families of Savorito and we are ready to take to the streets alongside them – said Antonio Sessa and Veronica Santaniello – They are facing this complicated situation because every day.

day they are urged to abandon their homes in preparation for the demolition. Among these there are also families with minors who, given the situation of the family unit residing in illegal homes, risk being removed by social services and actually suffering trauma. None of them know where to go and they have never received the legitimate answer to their question: “Once our building is demolished, where will we go? What we will do?”.

This is a question that everyone in the district is asking and which was not answered by the extraordinary commission.” The association “L’isola dei Ragazzi” has been present in the area for over 30 years «and we can say, for this reason, that we know every single family situation – continues Veronica Santaniello – On Friday we will be at Savorito and we invite all residents to take to the streets for a moment of comparison, equipped with an identity card with ISEE certificate. Our idea is to bring the situation of each individual family to the commissioners.

On Friday we will be at Savorito and we invite all residents to take to the streets for a moment of discussion, equipped with an identity card with ISEE certificate. Our idea is to bring the economic situation of each individual family to the commissioners. We will also collect signatures for the establishment of a local committee. It is important that a reality of this type develops in that suburban neighborhood too. Having said this, I want to point out that we are for the redevelopment of the neighborhood because still living in these prefabricated buildings after years is truly shameful. But done in this way would damage the social fabric of the neighborhood even more, because there is no alternative housing solution for those who live in the buildings that will be demolished. I ask the schools of the district and the parish to join us to ask for a permanent technical table and have an immediate response for the families of Savorito.”

Meanwhile, on 15 April the deadlines for the submission of offers for the 22 million euro tender for the execution of the works on the first lot of the neighborhood regeneration project have expired, with the awarding of the contract which could arrive even before the installation of the next municipal administration. The works to be carried out in the first part of the project, the only ones with economic coverage, include the demolition of the existing public residential buildings, as well as the illegally occupied school complex. This work will allow the creation of 96 new public residential buildings, distributed in 7 buildings, a children’s centre, services, equipment, green spaces, including external roads and avenues, as well as a linear park, an urban area for sports, level parking for neighborhood businesses, underground parking for residents and pneumatic waste collection.
