Bologna is the first major metropolitan capital in Italy to conquer the maximum score (5 bike smiles) in the 2024 Yellow Flags of FIAB-ComuniCiclabili, the recognition of the Italian Environment and Bicycle Federation, now in its seventh edition, which evaluates and certifies the commitment of Italian territories in promoting cycling as a model of sustainable mobility.
«Bologna, ComuneCiclabile since the first edition – we read in the reasons – this year it narrowly reaches the goal of 5 bike smiles, the first major metropolitan capital to achieve this result. Apart from some small advances in the cycle network, the jump in scores is essentially due to to the implementation of City 30, which is proving to save lives already in these first weeks of implementation. We remember that the bar rises every year, and it will be necessary to continue with virtuous commitments to maintain the banner and continue to be a point of reference for our country. To this end, FIAB suggests the following: the need to continue with the construction of new school roads and widespread speed moderation interventions on roads 30, alongside the expansion of the Biciplan network with quality interventions. We hope to strengthen the installation of bicycle racks and safe parking throughout the municipal area, including the suburbs, to encourage cycling mobility, as well as the reopening of the velo station».
