MODENA. In the first two months of 2024, accidents in the Modena workplace increased by 19%.
A decidedly worrying growth, as well the increase in accidents at work which strictly concern the construction sector, which marks a +10% for 2023 compared to the previous year. Numbers that emerged last Friday during the Fillea festival, the acronym of the construction sector of the CGIL of Modena.
An initiative whose main objective was to discuss the future of a sector which has 20 thousand employees in the province. In particular, the Construction Fund registers 12,500 workers in Modena – of which 70% come from non-European countries – and two thousand companies, marking the record figure of 119 million in wages for 2023.

THE DATA
To illustrate the numbers was Rodolfo Ferraroprovincial secretary of the building trade union, who on Friday addressed the topic together with the PD parliamentarian Vincenza Rando, the regional councilor for Labor Vincenzo Colla, the councilor for Legality of the Municipality of Modena Andrea Bosi and the provincial secretary of the CGIL Daniele Dieci, as well as various “actors” of the construction supply chain.
«We organized this initiative – explained Secretary Ferraro – to draw attention to the future of the construction sector and its role in the Modena and Italian economy, a strategic and anti-cyclical sector, capable of driving the economy of our country in the last three years, thanks to the investments of the Superbonus, the challenge of the Pnrr, the EU Green Directive and the UN Agenda 2030. Unfortunately, a sector that has always been at the top of the rankings for injuries, often serious and even fatal, and for professional diseases, attractive for the organized crime in an area like the Modena area, sadly famous for the largest ‘Ndrangheta trial in Northern Italy, “Aemilia”, which saw the CGIL constitute a civil party”.

BUILDING
Returning to the numbers, in 2023 in the province of Modena «we recorded data of unprecedented violence – continues Ferraro – with 15 deaths at work, 14,736 accidents reported, which means 40 per day, 810 occupational diseases, with an increase of 26% compared to the previous year, while injuries recorded by the Modena construction fund increased by 10% and those in the workplace in general grew by 19% in the first two months of 2024. The construction sector – the secretary of Fillea says – Unfortunately, he remains the one most affected.”
A sector which also suffers from extreme fragmentation, while one of the main problems «remains that of cascade subcontracting – urges Ferraro – while the deregulation that this government has made of the Procurement Code on the one hand attacks the concept of dignity of work and on the The other attacks the many serious companies that invest in the area and want to have credibility. At each subcontracting link there is a cut in salary and security. This is why I believe the intervention of the municipal administration in this sense is urgent, because a procurement protocol that defends work is extremely urgent: we cannot risk the Modena construction sites becoming a jungle on the lives of workers and citizens”.
